World-building Notes
Hypnosis is commonly known to be effective and is a well-regulated, well-legislated, but niche field of mental health that remains unstudied, in a more thorough manner. It has demonstrated excellent results - but is considered morally murky.
The moral murkiness is compensated for by regulation and legislation to control it. In the United States, this takes on the form of a specific government agency that oversees therapeutic hypnosis and mental reprogramming, and registers it all.
This agency is responsible for registration of both patients and reprogrammed persons, and accreditation of hypnotists — it is a violation of law to practise hypnosis (outside of volunteers for your thesis) without the appropriate accreditation.
There is a major fine for first offences in professional hypnosis when lacking accreditation. The key distinction made is if the aspiring or professed hypnotist is taking money for their work. This does not apply to conscious, willing volunteers.
There are likelier to be stronger and stricter regulations in Europe than in the United States. The European Union almost certainly has their own agency or agencies across the continent. This is likely also true in places like Canada or in Mexico.
Lawful Enslavement of consensually reprogrammed volunteers is considered lawful. The individual having volunteered is considered the key element. Most nations consider this to have no bearing on the individual's fundamental human rights.
Due to the lack of comprehensive studies, deprogramming is harder than reprogramming. It is well-known reprogrammed persons can suffer brain damage from careless deprogramming attempts, or overwrite old brainwashing with new “code.”
Consented Mental Reprogramming (CMR) is common enough that it has prompted the beginnings of an observed but still mostly scientifically undocumented evolutionary response. Human Semen production is starting to show signs of change.
It is becoming more nutrient-dense, easier to bioflavour (translation: easier to sweeten what you produce), even steadily more voluminous in those who have regular orgasms. In some locations, it has started to be popularly called “cock milk.”
Evolutionary biologists are describing it as proof of evolution, similar to the disappearance of elephant tusks in Africa as a response to unchecked poaching. This has not yet impacted any world religions, but there are signs that it may, if slowly.
