Sienna threw herself down on her bed. Her mind was reeling from her altercation with her roommate. It was definite proof that this game was...well...real.

She didn't interact much with Kayla. Didn't have much reason to. They weren't friends, they were both just too poor to afford to live alone.

Kayla was a year older and had already graduated, but hadn't managed to find a use for her degree yet. Sienna was still in school, but after moving out of the dorm in first year she'd had trouble finding a good place to live. When Kayla had sent her that link, she'd been a little surprised. They'd only ever texted, briefly, about apartment related things. She thought the most likely thing was a freemium game that gave bonuses for sending links out. Normally she'd have ignored it altogether, but Kayla happened to catch her while she was riding the bus. She was bored, and had time, so she downloaded it.

She recognized that the game was based on Scrabble and while she'd never really played that game she clicked through all the boring explanatory stuff and just started playing. In her mind a good mobile game needed no introduction, otherwise it wasn't worth it.

The game flew by quickly and she lost. It announced a stupid punishment for her, but she just rolled her eyes and put her phone away. It was just a stupid game after all.

That's why she'd confronted Kayla, and that's why she now had three new punishments.

Sienna was exhausted by the time she got home. She opened up the fridge, found Kayla's leftovers, and took them out to eat. As she sat at the table having her late night, or rather early morning, snack she opened her phone. Curious, she opened up Words with Fiends.

The little demon guy Belial, was bouncing around the screen, "You have a heart! Want to play again? If you win you can remove a punishment!!!"

She was tempted, but she shook her head, "Nah...I'm too tired to think..." She went to close the app but Belail made another plea.

"Wait, how about a super special late night bonus round!?!?"

She tapped accept and the game started

"Oh fuck no..."

She'd expected...well she didn't know what she'd expected. But obviously she'd been had.

The usual PW tiles on the edges were there, but there were 4 more tiles like that. One had replaced a DD, one had replaced a DW, one had replaced a TP and the fourth...the fourth had replaced the middle tile. As in she had to use a PW just to start the game.

The timer was already counting down.

Belial's form popped up with 'hehehehe' above it.

She groaned. If she skipped her turn then Belial could go in the middle without worrying about it. Then she could play off it, but she'd only have 3 turns to his 4. Would the bonuses be enough to overcome him that way?

Fuck, she'd have to risk it. She waited until the timer ran out.

"Oh? Risky risky!" Belial taunted. It instantly played a word, INGOTS, for 7.

Seeing that he only got 7made her sigh in relief. She COULD do this.

Or could she? She was panicking now. She had to do something, something good. But she was tired and quite frankly, bad at word games.

Time was running out. She could use a double letter, but didn't see anything good. Without much choice she played it, ARCS, for 10.

Belial played TZARINA for 16, opening up a triple word for her...or a PW tile. She just had to find something to play there. She'd picked up a Q, but she didn't have a U and didn't know any words that didn't start with QU...Fuck. She needed to win this.

She found a word to go on the triple, avoiding the PW tile. It was worth some points, but she did hesitate briefly. If she lost and the punishment related to this word...but no, she couldn't think like that. HEAD, for 24, giving her an 11 point lead.

It didn't last long.

OUTJINKXES, 23 points. She stared at the screen. How the fuck had it done that? Was it cheating? What even was that?!?

Belial comic face bounced around the screen, "Only losers cry foul!"

Her face burned, what the hell was it saying. She wasn't a loser.

Except...she was down 12 points AND Belial had an extra turn. It wasn't enough to just beat him, she needed buffer to guard against that final word. She had ****, she HAD to use a PW tile.

Belial had played a U, but it was in the top row and so she couldn't use her Q. In order to get points she had an F and an H, but she couldn't find a good spot for them. Time was ticking down. There, finally. SHELF. On a punishment word, but for 44 points. For a 32 point point lead.

Belial appeared to giggle, "You got me!" It laughed.

It played OVER, for 7 points.
