Chapter 13 by Jpyric Jpyric

Waving to Orin, Kael follows the older man out of the training fields.

Wise words

Bernal leads the way down a hallway, and into a rarely used dining hall set aside for the champions. Bernal takes a seat, gesturing for Kael to do the same. The older man smiles warmly, leaning back in his chair.

“So. I understand you’ve been given a young elven woman as a reward for your efforts.”

Kael can’t hide a grimace. “Yes. Evie is her name.”

Bernal nods. “It’s a bit of an open secret, your attitude towards the servitude of the other races. While I may not share your attitude entirely, let’s just say that I understand it. That being said, I agree with the decision.”

Kael looks at him questioningly. “Why? Is this some attempt to convert me?”

Bernal shakes his head. “Not at all. Vince is not that sort of man, as you should know by now. The elf was selected specifically for you.”

Kael leans forward. “Again, why?”

Bernal sighs. “Two reasons. One, she is special, in ways it is not my place to say. You will understand that in time. Just trust me when I say that it is important that you be the one to have her.”

Kael sighs. “Very cryptic, old man.”

Bernal laughs. “Don’t get snippy with me, youngster. I may be old, but I can still take you down with one arm behind my back. I can’t tell you secrets that are not mine to share.”

Kael shrugs. “Fine. And the other reason?”

Bernal nods. “You need someone. You may not admit it, but your self inflicted solitary life will affect you. The elf may be a ****, but she is still a person. You’re empathetic enough to understand that, unlike Orin. He’s a good champion, but not such a good man.”

Kael shakes his head. “Agreed on Orin. But…it just seems so sudden. Evie was just dumped on me.”

Bernal smiles. “Just give it time. I know you, and I know you’ll do well with her. The fact that you already refer to her by name says a lot. One word of caution, though.”

He crosses his arms, his face growing serious. “Keep her safe. As I said, she is special, in ways that she herself doesn’t know. She was given to you because you are the best option. You will both gain from this.”

With that, he stands. “That’s all I can say. And I’m tired. Night duty is always tiring. Not as young as I used to be.”

He extends his hand. “Good to see you, Kael. Remember what I said here.”

Kael stands, shaking Bernal’s hand. “Of course. See you around, Master Bernal.”

Bernal rolls his eyes. “Get out of here, boy. You have things to do, I’m sure.”

Kael nods, taking his leave.
