Chapter 99 by The Night
First question
Why Velvet Vixen is a superheroine
Velvet Vixen sits stiffly in the tiny velvet chair, arms crossed over her satin-clad chest, still breathless from the sheer absurdity of her situation. Her gala outfit clings to her miniaturized form like a second skin, rumpled and dusted with sparkles from Mirage’s last magical flourish.
Madame Mirage leans in, her elbow on the table, chin cradled in her palm, her expression playful—yet just sharp enough to feel like a knife’s edge in a velvet glove.
“So tell me, darling…” she purrs, eyes dark with curiosity. “Why do you even do this? Playing heroine in heels—what’s in it for you?”
Velvet Vixen lifts her chin. She doesn’t squirm. Not visibly.
“Because someone has to.”
Mirage’s brow lifts.
“Oh, please. Don’t give me that righteous ‘someone has to’ line. It doesn’t suit your glitter.”
Vixen shrugs. Her voice is small but steady.
“I didn’t grow up wanting to be some masked icon. I read comics. I dressed up for Halloween. I liked the idea of… being something more than just a face in the crowd.”
She narrows her eyes up at her captor.
“And yeah, maybe I like the attention. Maybe I like the danger.”
Her voice lowers, playful now.
“But I don’t play heroine. I am one. Fancy boots and all.”
Mirage leans back slowly, lips curling with interest.
“Mmm… So it’s part fantasy, part fame, and part fight-the-good-fight. You really are full of surprises.”
She taps the table with her wand, thoughtful.
“You could’ve been one of us, you know. With your flair for drama? You’d have made a fabulous rogue.”
Velvet Vixen smirks.
“I already wear a mask and leather. If I wanted to be a rogue, I’d be running the city by now.”
Mirage laughs.
“Touché, darling.”
But there’s a glint in her eye now—one that says she’s not done asking questions
Mirage's next question...
