No fair, Jane Harker thought as she stared at the big wolf that was blocking her path. Back in Transylvania, the wolves rarely appeared until after dark. But here, of course, they had to be different.
Then Jane noticed the wolf growling at her.
Jane thought about simply dodging around it but the wolf simply moved to block her route, no matter which way she ran.
Then she heard the voice of Renfield speak from behind her. "You might as well give up now. Fenris isn't likely to let you slip by him, no matter what you do."
Jane turned her head and saw Renfield staring at her naked body in the same asexual way he had done in the cell. As she looked at him, she saw him thrust a stick into a nearby ant hill and then put the stick in his mouth. Afterwards, Renfield smiled at her and said, "Ants. My only weakness."
Jane looked around for help and saw nothing save a tall red-headed shape on the horizon. What that was, Jane had no idea, but she knew she could not count on anyone but herself at the moment. Unless...
"Please don't take me back," Jane said as she fell to her knees in front of Renfield. "If you let me go, I won't say a word about your Master. I promise."
Renfield smiled in a way that was not all that nice. "I should sic Fenris on you right now but fortunately for you, the Master and his three mistresses want you alive. So come with me if you want to live. Because if I have to use Fenris on you, it would be most unfortunate for you."
Jane reluctantly stood up and then looked at Renfield. Then she looked at Fenris and then at the wall. And then she looked down and saw --
"Look, Fenris," said Jane, waving a small stick she had picked up off the ground. "A stick. A stick."
Despite himself, Fenris seemed intrigued by the stick. And even more intrigued when Jane threw it away and shouted, "Go fetch!"
As the wolf ran after the stick, Jane immediately ran toward the wall. She heard Renfield curse behind her and then start to run after her, but by then, Jane had had too much of a head start.
She was going to make it, Jane thought. Believe it or not, she was going to actually make it to the wall.
She had never been much of a climber but pure fear gave her incentive to try her best to scramble up the wall before Renfield caught up with her. Indeed, to her surprise, she made it to the top of the wall quicker than she had imagined.
Then Jane looked down and saw Renfield start to climb up after her. At that moment, Jane closed her eyes, and trusting to fate, threw herself over the top of the wall into the Westenra estate.
