Chapter 47
by Bengates
Prompt: Continue writing the conversation, Sarah confronts Jake over his feelings for her (or lack there of). Remember that Jake is an ancient werewolf that has lived thousands of years.
Whew the drama! The first write was very bland, I asked it to re-write it in the style of George R. R. Martin, trashed it, then asked it to style after Timothy Zahn.
Sarah looks at Jake with a mixture of sadness and anger, "How can you be so callous, Jake? You've lived for thousands of years, seen countless people come and go, but have you ever stopped to think about the pain and suffering that they endure in their short lives? How can you be so indifferent to the struggles of mortals?"
Jake looks at her with a cold gaze, "It's precisely because I've lived for so long that I know how pointless it is to get involved in the struggles of mortals. They're born, they live, and they die. It's an endless cycle of birth and **** that will continue long after we're gone. What does it matter what happens to them? They're just dust in the wind."
Sarah's voice trembles with emotion as she replies, "It matters because we're a part of that cycle, Jake. We're not above it. We're a part of it. And if we have the power to make a difference, then it's our responsibility to do so. We have a chance to help these people, to make their lives a little better, and maybe even prevent more suffering. How can you just turn a blind eye to that?"
Jake's eyes narrow as he responds, "Because I know that no matter what we do, it won't make a difference in the end. People will still suffer, they'll still die. And eventually, everything will pass away to dust. It's the way of the world, Sarah. I can't change that, and neither can you."
Sarah's voice was shaking as she looked directly into Jake's eyes. "Am I just dust to you as well? Is that how you see me?"
Jake paused; his expression unreadable. "What do you mean?"
"You don't care about mortals, humans, or anyone. You don't care about what they do to each other, or what they feel. Do you even care about me?"
Jake let out a long sigh. "Of course I care about you, Sarah. But you have to understand, I'm an ancient. I've seen empires rise and fall, entire civilizations come and go. In the grand scheme of things, human lives, even half elves like you are like a flicker of a flame. It's not that I don't care, it's just that I see things from a different perspective."
"That's not an excuse, Jake," Sarah said, her voice rising in frustration. "Just because you're ancient doesn't mean you get to ignore the lives of others. You helped me with the old god's avatar, and you can help these villagers too. We can make a difference, and we can start by dealing with those bandits in a peaceful way. I don't want to resort to **** if we don't have to."
Jake let out a low growl. "Peaceful solutions don't always work, Sarah. Sometimes **** is the only language some people understand."
"But not all bandits are the same," Sarah argued. "Some of them turn to banditry because they've lost everything. They have nothing left to live for. We can help them, Jake. We can show them that there's another way."
Jake stared at Sarah, his eyes hard and unyielding. "I'll think about it. But if they resist, if they attack us, then I won't hesitate to use ****."
Sarah's face fell. "That's not what I want, Jake. I don't want any more ****."
Jake reached out and took Sarah's hand. "I know, Sarah. But sometimes **** is necessary. I'll do what I can to minimize it, but I won't back down if I have to fight."
Sarah looked down at their hands, feeling a mixture of anger and sadness. She knew that she couldn't change Jake's mind, but she couldn't help feeling like he was missing something important. She pulled her hand away from his and turned to walk away, leaving Jake alone with his thoughts.
Prompt: Write a new scene about one of the public officials secretly being in league with the bandit leader.
