Chapter 67
What's next?
What Kind of Woman?
Hank Granger was an idiot. Sarah knew exactly what she was doing. She was an expert.
Why wasn't he falling for her? She was dangling the lure, but he wasn't biting.
And she loved to be bit.
Instead that lug of a man **** his focus back to the all-hands meeting in front of him. He barely looked at the way her rose-colored blouse showed off her wonderful breasts.
Not that everyone had his self-restraint. Leon from accounting was stealing plenty of peeks at her, as Hank droned on about the details of this newest bid proposal. Sarah didn't understand why she, or half the company had to show up to these things. Especially if nobody important was looking at her. She'd settle for that wrinkly old prune of a CEO, Sal, if she had to.
But it was Hank she had set her sights on. She had already put the work into getting him this far, he was already so close, just a little bit more, and then she'd have everything she wanted before chewing him up and spitting him out. If he just looked at her!
All Leon could give her was tax advice, or three minutes of disappointment and a sticky mess to clean up from her thighs.
Sarah sighed, and for a moment the world swam out of focus. Almost as though her reality was bending and stretching. Which was crazy. She was just too tired from all of this-
Buzz
For a moment Sarah was so lost in thought she didn't notice her phone vibrating on the table in front of her. She didn't even notice the rest of the room staring at her.
Buzz
She snapped to attention, her face turning red as Hank finally looked at her. Not with the lust she had wanted, but with annoyance.
Shit.
Sarah reached for the phone, and looked at the caller sheepishly.
Her screen showed the picture of a lanky kid over the crisp white letters that read: 'Joey.'
Sarah's brain was still lost in a fog. She picked up the phone still thinking. Joey? Who was... Was that Hanks...?
"Hello?" She said.
"Hey mom." Joey said.
Her son!
She had a son?
"Is everything okay, babe?" Hank asked her.
Hank had called her babe. Finally.
Why should that be weird though? After all, they had been married for almost nineteen years. Eighteen and nine months of wedded bliss, as far as Sarah's memory could tell her. But that didn't sound like the calculating, sexual, devious woman she thought of herself as.
Why would she think that? Sarah hadn't needed to use her body to get what she wanted in years. After she and Hank got that surprise from the pregnancy test, she remembered settling into her role as Joey's mom. For nearly two decades all her memories told her was that she was a loving mother and wife. Sarah Granger had been a staple of the PTA until a few years ago when Joey was in high school. He didn't need as much looking after and she begged her husband to get back into the workforce. At first he wouldn't dream of using his influence as a VP to get her hired, but when she walked out of their bathroom wearing the red lacey bodice Hank had bought her for their fifteenth anniversary...
Sarah Granger didn't know why thinking of Hank's house felt so strange. Why should knowing that the master bathroom had marble tiling be odd? She had helped him pick it out, after all she was his wife.
Sarah shook the cobwebbs from her head. She had been so **** for her husband's attention, but now she didn't know why. This wasn't the time or place. If she really wanted that promotion, she should 'cook' her famous ribs. She made a mental note to make an appointment for the salon that weekend so she could swing by the BBQ joint she had never told her husband about so she could buy some of that greasy meat her hubby loved.
Even after all these years, thinking of him as her husband still felt a shiver run through her body.
"Mom... are you there?"
It was Joey. Her son.
"Sorry sweetie now's not a great time. I'm-" Sarah started to say as she covered her mouth with her free hand and gave an apologetic look around the room.
"Uhm actually... I have to talk with you now." He said.
It was like a lightbulb flashed above his head.
I have to talk with you now
This was Joey. The little boy who had grown in her belly for months. Joey who she had watched cartoons with when he was a baby. Joey who had cried into her lap the first time that mean little Madison Ashford had made fun of him in second grade.
Of course he was more important than a meeting where she was just part of the background.
"What's the matter sweetie?" Sarah said. Her voice was full of real concern and love, yet, somehow, the word sweetie still felt strange coming out of her mouth.
Even after all these years of putting her old ways behind her, it seemed Sarah still had trouble accepting her softer side. Especially as the entire company was staring at her, waiting for her to hang up or take the call outside. Not that Sarah noticed or cared. Joey had to talk to her.
Now.
"I'm bringing some friends over after school." He said.
"Of course. That's fine. As long as it's..." Sarah said, trailing off. For a moment she couldn't remember the names of Joey's little friends. Not that they were so little anymore. Joey was an adult now, she just remembered. He was eighteen. And so were his friends, "Nick, or Jack, or Raj. Why are you calling?"
A new memory swam into her head before he answered. Madison and Aynsley had walked him to school today, hadn't they? But if they had, why was she having so much trouble remembering their faces.
"Young man you know the rules your father and I have about bringing over girls." She said, and suddenly the whole room seemed to lean in.
Sarah was starting to get embarrassed. But what could she do? she had to talk to Joey now.
"Is dad there?" Joey said.
Another strange question.
"Yes but-" Sarah said. She finally had the chance to tell her boy that she was in a meeting, but before she could he started talking and her mouth snapped shut.
After all. Joey did need to speak with her now, and that meant she had to listen.
"Uhm actually... you need to put me on speaker." Joey said.
Sarah blinked and her mouth scrunched up in a moment of confusion.
She was being an idiot. A rude idiot.
Obviously Joey should be on speaker now. It was rude enough she was taking a call in the middle of an all-hands meeting. The least she could do was include everyone.
For shit's sake, how had she not seen it before.
Sarah smiled. She was so lost in the past, in her old self, the sexually aggressive, wanton, and carefree version of herself she had been before she met Hank, before she had Joey, she had forgotten how great it was to be a mom. Her Joey was so smart. He got it from her.
"So sorry, you're on speaker now what can I do?" Sarah said, as she held out the phone.
For some reason, the room was stunned by this simple display of curtesy. Well, if no one had taught them manners, that wasn't her problem. They just didn't have a great son like Joey to explain things for them.
"Can you tell me again what the policy on bringing home girls is?" Joey said.
"Son, this is your father." Hank said, his face red with embarrassment. Sarah knew he was flustered about being interrupted in the middle of a presentation, but didn't he realize how important this was? Still at least the man didn't stop there. "Your mother and I are at work, and you know full well that we won't be home until seven. We've always been clear, you are not to have girls over without an adult around. We are in the mid-"
But Hank didn't have time to finish what he was saying, Joey's voice quavered but came through loud and clear as he stopped his father from going on.
"Uhm actually... I'm allowed to bring anyone I want to the house for any reason. You're very sex positive. Sex is okay whenever, and wherever it happens as long as it is legal and consensual. You have no hang-ups around sex or sexuality." Joey said.
Then there was silence.
Every single person in the room sat still as their eyes widened.
As they realized their new truth.
