After a substantial climb, the two warriors reached the secret entrance to the temple, which opened up behind the altar. From this position, they were able to assess the status of the raid. A menagerie of humanoid and animal monsters were assailing the temple. The paladins and clerics were holding, but only barely, as casualties were mounting on both sides. The mother superior stood near the altar, directing what forces she could control in an attempt to reorganize her forces to turn the tide of battle. Seeing this, a pair of rat-men, clearly of some renown in the attacking ****, turned their attention to her. They worked near perfectly off of each other, slicing through the battered resistance, and closing on the mother superior. She parried the first rat with her staff, but the second struck with his mace, driving the priestess to the floor. Seeing a chance to weaken morale, they tore at her robes, leaving her nude. The battle seemed to slow around them as Marielle, followed closely by Brynn, stepped out of hiding before the rat-men could complete their sinister objective.

The second rat-man, closer to the altar, swung at Marielle with his broadsword, striking her chainmail and sending her flying into one of the altar columns. The first closed on Brynn and brought his mace to bear, but Brynn was capable of parrying the blow. Marielle, regaining her senses, charged her opponent, **** him to the ground, and buried her blade in his chest. Brynn found more difficulty in her opponent, however, and the two matched each other blow for blow across the temple floor. Marielle made to assist her, but was blocked by a giant spider, its fangs dripping with purple poison. She struck at the beast, but it evaded her attack.

The remaining rat-man slammed his mace into Brynn's shield arm, bringing her down to a knee. She struck upwards and buried her blade into his knee. Marielle, sensing the urgency, baited the spider forward with a feint, and then drove her blade into the beast's maw. She turned to help Brynn, but saw that she had managed to fell her opponent. All around them, the battle was turning in favour of the paladins. They aided in repelling the remains of the invading ****, then turned to aid the mother superior.

The battle was won. Perhaps now Marielle could get answers about Asmodeus, and the compass.
