Chapter 15
by TheMouse
What's next?
Wake up!
You launch upwards in your bed, your body covered in a light coating of sweat. You look around your room to find Raven midway through changing and Jinx on the floor next to you in a panic. Your hand was clenched tightly around the dagger you kept under your pillow.
"WHAT THE FUCK!" Jinx yells, and your attention is on her as your instincts take over. Your eyes were focused on her looking at her limbs and movements, expecting an attack and ready to kill.
"RIDER!" Raven yells, snapping you back into reality, "what?" You ask, still coming back to your senses. Rubbing your eyes, you look back at Jinx, who seems scared. The blade falls from your hand as you reach over to help Jinx up onto the bed.
"I'm sorry, Jinx. Are you okay?" You ask as Jinx sat down next to you, "what the hell was that?!" She asks, understandable, freaked out.
"Sorry, I had a nightmare." You said, wiping the sweat off your head before slipping your knife back under the pillow. You collected yourself, steadying your breathing.
"What kind of nightmare causes that?" Jinx asks understandably, still shaken, but Raven sits next to you, gently touching your shoulder. "Is this why you never seem to sleep?"
You take a breath before smiling, "Nah, just don't like to sleep." you said with a laugh, but Raven wasn't buying it. She was a master at covering her emotions, and she knew when someone was putting on a mask, and that's all you ever did.
"Hey, maybe it was because I wasn't cuddling him." Jinx says, "Shut up," Raven said, still looking at you with interest, "Tonight, we'll do something. I have an idea." Raven moves back over to finish dressing, "get ready. We have a long day."
The girls left you alone in your room. After making sure everything was still where it was supposed to be, you joined them in the main hall about an hour later. You shivered as you looked at the doors remembering 'him' coming through with Raven and the blade, but you pushed on. After all, it was just a dream.
"Morning, big guy~," Jinx says with her lips wrapped on a coffee cup. You look over to Raven, who's just plating up some eggs and bacon, "morning", she says in her usual uncaring tone. Still, unlike normal, she's wearing a small smile. "How are you feeling," Raven asks as You sit down at the table next to Jinx.
You look up at the smiling Raven, but you can't help but remember the knife at her throat. "Fine," you say, but your thoughts must have been evident because Raven's face turns. "So we can block your bad dreams, but I'm going to need to do some research," She asks, giving you the plate of food which you start shovelling into your mouth immediately. "Don't worry about it. I've had them since I was a kid. I'm used to them," you said with the adequacy of BB with food in your mouth. You weren't a morning person.
"That's not the point, Rider," Raven said sternly while sitting opposite you. "What is the point then? There are just bad dreams, nothing more." Raven remains quiet, but it's clear she isn't done with the matter, "Supprised you guys aren't fighting."
"We've been discussing plans for patrol tonight," Raven says, cutting into her food elegantly. You perked up. Patrol usually means standing on a rooftop for a few hours, ensuring the city wasn't on fire. You found a way to make the most of it by seeing how fast you could move between buildings. In fact, you've been working on something for just such an occasion.
"Great, I'll do it." You say eagerly.
"No, you're staying here with her." Raven motions to Jinx, who grins with glee. "Raven, come on, it's best if I go. We still don't know what that beam did to you-" Raven looks at you with an intense gaze, "I'm not winning this. Am I? You ask Raven, who has a scary look on her face.
"No"
"Fine," you said, now in a mood, you quickly finish your breakfast, "Thanks," you said to Ravne, who picked up your plate. "You cooked dinner only fair. I made breakfast," she said with a small smile.
Once again, you found yourself in your favourite room in the Tower, the training room. The new item was strapped firmly on your arms. They were light, but you could still feel them clearly on your body.
You flick your right arm forward, and a metal dagger attached to a strengthened line bursts forwards towards the ceiling. The blade impales itself cleanly through the concrete, and with another flick of your wrist, you're pulled upwards. You fall back down, and with your left arm, you fire another line drawing you towards it with a lot of speed.
You were amazed at Cyborgs ingenuity. Some time ago, you had the idea to compensate for your lack of speed compared to Starfire Raven and BeastBoy. Your first design was absolute garbage. It didn't even fire.
You landed back down on to the floor satisfied about the equipment, it would take some time to adapt them into your fighting, but it would be worth it. You were looking forward to leaping from the buildings to see just how fast you could get, but Raven had made her decision, and you couldn't go against it.
"Don't you have anything better to do?" Jinx asks, sitting on the sideline. You had completely forgotten that she was there.
"No, because someone destroyed the TV." You look at Jinx with a grin, and she looks away in embarrassment.
"Don't you ever get tired of it?" Jinx asks
"Nah, it keeps me focused," you said without looking away from your training.
"I meant being a hero. Don't you get tired of always being a goody goody?"
You paused, "sometimes, it's frustrating to hold everything in. It's another reason I train a lot. It's a way to vent."
Jinx hops up from her seat and walks over towards you, her hands held behind her back with a grin, "I know a few other ways to let off some steam." Jinx was almost face to face with you by now, her smile only widening.
"Wanna know what it is?" She asks teasingly
"Sure"
"Good." Jinx leans in closely before quickly pulling back and walking away. Better get dressed, then the game will start in about ten minutes, oh and wear something comfortable.
Whats the game?
