A few minutes pass. I pace in the hall, acutely aware of my remaining time slipping away. There is a flush, a faucet starts running, then the bathroom door pops open.

I doubt Tonya can even see me under the weight of her heavy eyelids. She jabs my gut with a ball of bony knuckles as she pushes past me.

“What was that for?”

“In my way...” she mumbles, shuffling to her room.

“You missed a great workout today,” I say to her back.

“Mm-hmm.”

“You could get off your ass and join us next time.”
