Chapter 4 by Liger_zero Liger_zero

What to do?

Wait patiently

No matter how much I tell myself I need to change, I cant really convince myself that its ok to inconvenience people doing their jobs.

I sat queitly in place and did as many stretches as I could from my position in bed. Im not sure how long I've been here but I felt stiff as a corpse. before long, I heard some footsteps approaching and I did my best to sit up and look normal.

From the hallway came a fairly tall older woman with small rectangular glasses sitting on top of a small rounded nose. her long blond hair was tied up in a ponytail and the lines on her face made me guess she was somewhere in her late 30's or early 40's. she had the kind of expression you would find on the face of a kindly elementary school teacher.

she was followed very shortly by a tall skinny blonde man with short curls, this man was in simple nurse scrubs and was pushing a cart with all sorts of tools and instruments on it. the man stayed quiet but quickly rolled up next to the bed and began to strap a blood pressure cuff on my arm. the woman took a chair beside the bed and placed a clipboard in her lap. she smiled at me, but there was a tinge of worry in her expression.

"Hi! I'm Dr. Cybil. How are you feeling today?" she asked, clicking a pen and readying herself to write something.

"I've been better" I joked a bit, trying to get rid of the anxiety I felt from the situation. she didnt find it very funny, she just kept talking.

"Do you remember how you got here?" she asked as the ripping sound of velcro filled my ear as the male nurse took a note and moved on to the next test, politely asking me to sit up as he pulled down the top of the gown and placed a cold metal stethescope against my chest. it was always strange to feel exposed like this to strangers, even in a doctors office.

"breathe in please" the nurse asked. I did what I was told, all the while trying to think about how to awnser the doctor. what DO I remember?

"Breath out" he instructed. after a few cycles, I spoke up.

"I think I remember a snake biting me, then things were blurry, I think I may have heard sirens at one point... and now im here."

Dr. Cybil looked a little concerned, jotting something down quickly.

"I also remember that woman and her dog... are they ok?" I blurted out, causing the Doctor to set her pen down and smile gently at my concern.

"they are doing fine, that woman stayed here as long as she was able but eventually she had to go to take care of some buisness." she looked at me, this time giving me a little bit of a smirk "she left you a get well gift you know, she seemed quite grateful. as I've heard it, you're a bit of a hero to her" she tapped my leg and gave a subtle wink "I think so too" she said.

I didnt need to look in the mirror to know that I was blushing, did I imagine that just now? just then the male nurse scoffs

"could you not do that when Im taking his temperature?" he chuckles, and the doctor joins in, and before long so do I.

after a good laugh the nurse begins to pack up his things and push the cart on to the next patients room, the doctor sticks behind for a bit, crossing her legs in her chair and looking me over.

"you seem to be much better, you can probably be ready for discharge this afternoon, you may need to get someone to pick you up though"

"Oh right... I should probably tell my family that I almost died" I said with a nervous chuckle. the doctor, who had looked pretty cheerful until a moment ago suddenly looked worried. something wasnt quite adding up.

"yeah..." she agreed as she seemed to get lost in thought. It felt clear to me that she had something she wanted to say but wasnt sure how to say it...

what do I say?
