Chapter 24
by
GreenBean
Follow her or wait here?
Wait impatiently
Jessica clenched her teeth and took deep breaths as she waited, watching the feathered cloak disappear down the alley she had walked a hundred times. Jessica inched forward, impatiently. Hefting her borrowed axe over her shoulder as if she knew how to use it.
Jessica felt as if any noise would set her on edge, as quiet continued.
How long was too long? Jessica could see her shadow from the moonlight. Was that noise her imagination?
Jessica's breaths came quick, as she a second noise confirmed her thoughts, she stepped forward again, only to see the feathered cloaked hunter backpaddle out of the alley, chased by a gangly wolfman. Its teeth were red with blood, but if it were its own, or from a victim, she was not certain.
A sudden surge of fury took her. This night, these beasts, their violence, the mindlessness. With a unbidden cry of frustration she charged forward with the axe swinging a large wild swing. But her unskilled assault was too obvious for the wolf, as the wolfman just scuttled away from the strike in a strange side leap. But the distraction was more than enough for the Crow. Jessica didn't see the strikes as much as she saw flashes of silver and the Crow appear atop the beast, followed by twin geysers of blood as the two imbedded blades drained the beast, followed by another ghastly cry as it convulsed in pain.
Jessica tasted the hot splash of blood again, and she recalled how this night started, and her heart beat harder in chest. The beast was half-dead already, but she'd still have a chance to strike it before this hunt was over, and taste its blood first-hand. Jessica rushed the beast and drove the axe wildly into its head. The blade turned aside, but wallop still knocked the beast from regaining footing.
The Crow let out an auditable click of annoyance, at either her or the vigorous beast, before twisting her blades and ripping them free from its torso and leaping off the thing's back with a completely unnecessary flip.
Jessica stood there teeth bared as she watched life leave the thing's eyes. The Crow beat the blood out of her cloak as she regarded her.
"Beast's all over the shop, take care you don't become one either." And with that, the woman walked off into the night.
Blood-drenched and denied revenge, Jessica stood over the cooling corpse, knuckles white-tight on the axe, footsteps away from home.
