What's next?
Van's Suite - Intake
The master suite was quiet.
The corridor outside the dormitory wing had been alive with voices, arguments, doors opening and closing, the sharp little sounds people made when trying to decide whether they were angry or frightened. Here the air seemed thicker, muffled by carpets and tall ceilings and the sort of expensive restraint that absorbed noise rather than reflecting it.
Van followed Verena down the last stretch of hallway in silence. At the end stood a pair of double doors carved from dark wood, inlaid with a subtle gold design that caught the light only when he moved. Not ornate. Just unmistakably important.
Verena stopped before them. “This,” she said, “is your residence.”
Van folded his arms. “You mean my gilded cage.”
Verena inclined her head slightly. “If that description helps you emotionally organize the experience, you are welcome to it.”
The doors opened before he could reply. The suite beyond was enormous. Not in the showy, palace-like way he might have expected. The scale was subtler than that. A wide living space with tall windows overlooking the lake. Deep couches arranged around a low table with bookshelves already half-filled. A fireplace opposite a long wall display that was currently dark.
Beyond that lay a dining alcove, a small office area with polished desk and data panels, and farther still a bedroom partially screened by soft architectural partitions. A bed large enough for a small army sat at its center beneath a high canopy of white fabric that softened the sunlight.
Van stopped just inside the threshold. He hated it immediately. Not because it was ugly. Because it wasn’t. The place was comfortable in the way someone imagined comfort when they were already used to mansions. Not the kind of everyday comfort imagined by refugees.
“You expect me to live here,” he said.
Verena’s face didn’t twitch. “Yes.”
“I didn’t ask for it.”
“No,” Verena said. “You were selected for it.”
He turned toward her. “You really don’t hear how that sounds.”
“I hear it perfectly.” She stepped into the room, heels soft against the carpet.
Unlike the dormitory rooms, nothing here felt duplicated or symmetrical. Every object seemed chosen individually — the chairs, the books, the soft rugs underfoot. Even the lighting was warmer, less institutional. Van noticed that and hated it even more.
“You’re trying to bribe me,” he said.
Verena gave him a curious look. “No.”
“Yes you are.”
“If we were attempting bribery, Master Van,” she said calmly, “the offer would involve something you could refuse.”
He flinched slightly at the title. “I told you to stop calling me that.”
“No,” the answer was finite. A measured thing with edges. The word landed softly but with the same immovable weight it had in the orientation hall.
Van paced across the room, running a hand through his hair. “You keep acting like I’m in charge of something here.”
“You are,” her tone was like carved marble, “in some ways.”
“No, I’m not.”
“Your authority is conditional,” Verena said. “But it is real.”
He stopped near the windows. Outside, the lake shimmered under the artificial afternoon sun. A path curved around its edge where lantern posts waited for nightfall. The whole place looked like a brochure for a university that wanted parents to feel safe sending their children away.
“Conditional authority,” he repeated.
“Yes.”
“Meaning what,” he demanded. “Be specific.”
Verena clasped her hands lightly behind her back.
“Meaning the structure of the program recognizes your position even if the operational rules limit your ability to change them.”
“That’s just a fancy way of saying I’m the centerpiece of a system I can’t control.”
“That is a reasonably accurate summary.” she never even turned to look at him, just passed sentence.
Van let out a short breath. “Great.” He turned back toward her. “So tell me something useful. Why the hell am I separated from them?”
Verena didn’t answer immediately. Instead she walked to the window beside him and looked out over the grounds. “For several reasons,” she said.
“That’s not an answer,” he was getting tired of half-truths.
“It is the beginning of one.”
Van waited. Verena gestured lightly toward the lake below. “Distance preserves perspective,” she said. “If you were housed among the contestants, the social structure would begin forming around immediate proximity rather than intentional interaction.”
Van frowned. “In plain English?”
“In plain English,” Verena said, “constant access would distort the dynamic.”
“Because you want them competing for time with me,” he asked.
“Among other things.”
He stared at her. “You say that like it’s normal.”
“It is normal,” she replied. “For this environment.”
Van walked toward the bedroom area, then back again. The suite was too large to pace comfortably. That felt deliberate too. “They’re scared,” he said finally.
“Yes.”
“And you expect me to just… what,” he struggled for what to say next, “Smile and play along?”
“No.”
That caught him off guard. “No?”
“No,” Verena said. “We expect you to struggle.”
“Good,” he said bitterly. “Because I plan to.”
“Struggle is productive,” she said calmly. “Resistance often reveals more about character than compliance.”
Van leaned against the back of one of the couches. “You really believe this is the only way.”
Verena tilted her head slightly. “No.”
That stopped him again. “No?”
“There are other ways,” she said. “They simply fail more often.”
The room went quiet. Outside the windows, the lake rippled gently. “You’re talking about worlds like mine,” Van said slowly.
“Yes,” again her voice was like a frozen statue.
“How many,” he dreaded the answer, but couldn’t stop himself from asking.
Verena’s gaze returned to him. “That is not information available at your current stage.”
“Convenient,” an edge of anger was bleeding back into his voice.
“Accurate.”
He stared at her for a moment longer. Then something else from the orientation surfaced in his mind. “You said the facility has layers.”
“Yes,” now she was almost terse, like she would rather avoid the next question at this stage.
“What does that mean?”
Verena moved toward the long wall display and touched the edge of it lightly. The surface came alive with soft golden light. A map of the campus appeared — but not just the parts they had walked through. Additional sections flickered at the edges of the image. Some labeled. Some hidden behind blurred fields of light.
“This facility is not static,” she said.
Van stepped closer. “What am I looking at?”
“Possibilities.”
He studied the map. There were sections of the complex he hadn’t seen yet. Entire wings still dimmed out. “Those unlock later,” he guessed.
“Yes.”
“Why?” his confusion was plain. “Why all the secrets? It isn’t like we can escape. You said so.”
“Because discovery encourages cooperation.”
He gave her a flat look. “You mean you’re gamifying the prison.”
Verena considered the phrasing. “That is one interpretation.”
“Give me the other one.”
“The environment evolves alongside the participants.” The Headmistress was using that “on-camera” tone this time.
Van looked back at the display. “What kind of things unlock.”
“Training modules. Personal privileges. Expanded facilities. Narrative events. Opportunities the producers believe will encourage growth.”
Van looked sickened at that last part. “Growth?”
“Yes.”
“You say that like you’re running a school.”
Verena’s lips curved slightly. “In many respects, we are.”
Van shook his head. "This is insane.”
“Possibly.”
“And the girls are just supposed to…,” he rounded on Verena, tension clear in his shoulders, “discover all of that while they’re being turned into whatever the audience votes for?”
“Yes.”
He looked at her again. “You’re not even pretending it’s fair.”
“Fairness,” Verena said gently, “is rarely the deciding factor in whether a world survives.”
That landed hard. Van looked away first. After a moment he gestured toward the map again. “What about me?”
Verena watched him carefully. “You are also subject to development.”
“Development?” His eyes were widening.
“Yes.”
Van looked her in the eyes for maybe the first time. “I thought transformations were for the contestants.”
“They are primarily designed for them,” Verena met his gaze with the ghost of acceptance on her face.
“Primarily.”
Verena’s eyes held his. “Your biology is unusual, Master Van.”
He felt the back of his neck prickle. “You mean the plague thing.”
“Yes.”
He was still reeling, “You already know what happened to me.”
“We know enough.”
Van crossed his arms again. “And?”
“And your adaptive genome is capable of responding to the same forces that shape the contestants.”
He stared at her. “You’re saying I can be transformed too.”
“Yes,” she made the first sign of hesitation. “Though that does not make you unique. Most Masters undergo some level of transformation. You are merely…ideal for our needs.”
Van shook his head, that was a lot to take in. “But you said transformation like the girls, is it by the audience?”
“Not initially.”
“Great,” he muttered.
Verena’s tone softened slightly — not kind, exactly, but less ceremonial. “You should understand something.”
“Try me.”
She stepped a half step closer to Van. “The success of this season does not depend solely on the contestants changing.”
Van frowned. “What does it depend on.”
Verena met his eyes. “All of you.” It was not unkind, just absolute. For a moment the room held only the quiet hum of the display panel. Then, faintly, from somewhere deeper in the facility—
A bell tone rang.
The sound rolled through the suite like a ripple in still water. Van felt his stomach tighten. “That’s the intake poll,” he said.
“Yes,” she had stepped back again, any emotion or shadow of one she had displayed was once again locked behind ancient eyes and an unbeaten heart.
“And you’re sending them into that right now.” Van was starting to half-panic again.
“They are already gathering.”
He looked at her. “Do you ever wonder if this system is the monster.”
Verena’s expression didn’t change. “I have seen many monsters,” she said. “This one might save your world.”
Another bell tone sounded.
Soft gold light flickered across the map. Van exhaled slowly. Then he straightened. “Well,” he said quietly. “I guess we’re about to find out what kind of world this harem thing makes.”
Verena inclined her head. “Shall we join the contestants, Master Van?”
He grimaced at the title again. But this time he didn’t argue. The doors of the suite opened as they approached them. And together they walked back toward the assembly hall — where eight frightened women and an unseen audience were already waiting to decide who would be the first to change.

What's next?
Harem Hotel
