Vampire Hunting as a Sport 2
Long time ago, over two decades, almost a quarter of century now, a vampire woman killed my son, while hunting. He was 16, she looked 15, wasn’t even the “gothic femme fatale” figure you would think about. Ratter floral, light, dresses and happy smile, a bit goofy.
Back them the existence of vampires was a secret, I had no idea. They have been in the open only for six years, mind you. Hard to remember that! Feels like a lifetime ago.
I was a single father, the mother was not in the picture. Decent human being, just not personally interested in being a mother. No motherly vein in her body, she would say. I will always be grateful to her for two things. Give me Dilon, and not blame me for his premature, tragic, **** when he was murdered by that vampire lassie.
Hunting accident. She though she would manage to hold her predatorial instincts before killing my boy, because he was her boyfriend.
I though she was human. We were both short in experience, and wrong.
Officially, it was registered as an accident. I will not go in the details about how I came to the conclusion the official versions didn’t matched what actually had happened.
Ever since my life has been dedicated to kill vampires.
First, of course, I wanted vengeance. Personal, selfish, vengeance.
Slowly, you must to understand, gradually and by no definitive single reason, this motivation changed. I was lucky to survive the first attempts. My targets where vampire bums, but any vampire is stronger, faster and more physically resilient than any human being can be. All of them have the instincts of a predator, the reflexes of a jaguar.
I didn’t yet knew the difference. I though those barely sentient monsters I was hunting were the thing that had murdered my son.
All vampires have the potential to manipulate human mind and implant short and simple commands that we blindly obey, without realize what we are doing. However, most lowlifes don’t know that, never learned to use it. They are too bestial to think clearly enough and all they manage to do is induce irrational panic or lethargy. When they manage to influence human minds at all.
Of course, the actual **** of my son was this girl, who I knew as his girlfriend. She was a Noble Vampire, not from the most powerful and prestigious family on Earth, but from one with significant power and influence in our Continent.
I had encountered few vampires who had developed the uncanny powers they call “blood-seeds”. The variety of those powers make them impossible to anticipate, and complicate things for the hunter. Unlike the vamps in movies those monsters do not always attack with their fangs and claws, openly running in the direction of our gun. Some are intelligent, rational, strategic. Set traps and carry their own guns, hide behind human bodyguards and security systems.
However, lowlife vamps are far less well equipped than Noble Vampires. Both in social resources, technology, and supernatural powers. The lowlife seldom has more than two grow blood-seeds, the average young Noble, child of the night, has around half a dozen.
When you understand about the families, that is a shock.
Worse than realize how difficult is to actually kill a vampire, for good.
The hunting protocol is to destroy the head. A headshot with a rifle usually does the job, if not a few will. That’s just to get the time to work, and the important part is to avoid hitting the torso. Because you need the vampire heart intact.
Knowing that, many vampires who are not bestial, mindless, predators boobytrap their ribcage in some way. Many Noble Vampires have explosive pacemakers implanted in their hears, that explode and may kill the hunter when we try to extract the hearth. Even it does not catches us, it destroy the hearth and guarantees the vampire will stay potentially alive. The family can bring it back to life.
Understand how powerful and ancient the families are, is worse than learn that.
After destroying my son’s ****, I had the illusion that I could fight against all vampires. Destroy them all. Free humanity from all vamps. Eventually, I had to settle to destroy one Vampire Family, the family of that vampire girl who killed my son.
I never accepted gifts or jobs from any vampire. Still, to survive and carry own than vengeance I ended coordinating my moves in cooperation with other vampire families. All vampires have enemies inside their own families, and all vampires have alliances and wars. Fight for space and access to limited resources is constant and deadly among them. Polite and civilizes sometimes, but never less than brutal.
Eventually, against my will, I felt in the understanding that no matter how many vampires you kill. The Nocturnal Courts remain unchanged.
More than that, the vampiric society becomes stronger every time it faces a new enemy. To kill many vampires guarantees more efficient and powerful vampires in the future. Those who endure are the best among them, and they have better things to teach the new generations every time their community rebuilds it strength after a crisis.
Only way to destroy all vampires would be to extinguish humanity. Make sure they do not have any person left to sustain their need for hunt intelligent prey.
Even I do not consider human extinction an acceptable price to pay for my vengeance.
I must live the rest of my life as a serial killer, an assassin, hunting down lawful members of our great society. Who just happen to be vampires. Because I cannot stop being a vampire hunter now. I suppose, in the end of night, is as natural to me to be a hunter as is natural to them to be vampires.
All my illusions about my actions as a hunter making the world a better place are lost. To kill vampires change nothing. End that one Vampire Family was the work of my life and by succeeding in doing that I didn’t improved the chances of humanity escape the fate that falls on us all. Of being prey for Nocturnal Courts. Despite this understanding, is too late for me, I cannot stop wile I am still alive.
I do not even want to stop. Because there is nothing else left in me, but the hunter.
How is that different from being what my prey is? No young vampire hunter should worry too much about this question. But we all must came into terms with it, if we don’t die too young and stupid to do so.

Inside the Box
Cosmic Urban Fantasy
I am following what is turning into me general inclination, of tell short stories that may mix or not but paint a picture of a setting. At first vampires were supposed to be a secondary element, they are not that important in the first chapters. Now, as more chapters came, this is turning into a story about vampires with some other things in the background. In any case, I am dealing with the trope outside the usual biblical/mythic element. My primary frame here is Astronomic Time Scale, and that's where this "Cosmic" in the subtitle came from. I cannot really promise any "horror" and there is some minor light eroticism. Pretty pink glasses most the time. As optimist utopian flavour as I can go. Hope you like.
