Underlying tension

Naruto asked the normal questions, was she OK, was she plotting against the Leaf, what were her hobbies, was she being threatened in any way, so on. However unlike normal where all he felt was boredom and vague irritation at having to do this interview again and again there was something more, not much but noticeable to him. "And how are things with your husband?" he asked.

Karui started and asked "what do you mean?" in confusion. Naruto had never asked such a specific question in these interviews before.

Naruto explained "Every time I hint at your family or Choji in particular you get just a little tense. Not worryingly so but I need to ask."

Karui defensively bit out "None of your business can we move on?"

Naruto stared her down "No we can't move on. You swore that you wouldn't lie to me and you'd answer all my questions, in return I promised to always investigate anything off about you no matter how minor. And this is the first time you've needed to be asked this so it's even worse."

She glared at him, he stared back. a contest of wills, a contest she was never going to win as after a minute she looked down and sighed "I'm sorry Naruto. I know this is a favor and I'm taking up your time so I'll stop making things hard for you." she sounded more down then Naruto had ever heard her before. "The truth is this isn't the first problem Choji has been having, it's not even the tenth. He isn't going to be sleeping on the couch, he's going to sleep in the guest room like he has for nearly a year now. I don't know what's wrong with him but it's always something. He breaks something, he argues about nothing, he forgets dates and promises. I don't know what's wrong, it's not like he's malicious about it but it's constant for nearly a year of him just messing up after messing up. He hasn't slept in our bed in so long, we haven't even seen each other naked in months and now he's dragging Chocho into it to?"

Naruto winced at her defeated tone and made a mental note to get Choji checked out by some Medics.
