Underdog

She was an underdog. Harper Adams grew up in the low country. From Irish settlers that had migrated during the great potato famine. She was a redhead, and indeed, most of the Adams girls had some sort of red hair, from reddish-brownish Aunt Ida, or strawberry-blonde cousin Linda.

Harper had never wanted to be in that spit of the low country past graduation. So she worked hard, studying day and night to become the valedictorian. But it wasn't her academic status that got her a scholarship out the capital city. It was this program, the Al-Assaf Scholarship. Her parents were against it. But this was Harper's ticket out. And the pale redhead knew she'd be an underdog again. That she'd need to prove herself. And she'd do what it took.
