Chapter 22 by TheFallacyGuy TheFallacyGuy

Which newspaper do you choose?

Undercreek Tribune - Monday, 23rd of May, 1884 - Undercreek Water Magnate to Host Lavish Anniversary Party for Elites

On the front of the newspaper is a photo of an owl-man. A man with fairly big eyes, large brown wings instead of arms and talons that look quite sharp. He is standing in an audacious study, which looks almost like a library. He is holding a watch and is standing in a pose that screams: "Quickly now, you're wasting my time." This is most likely the water tycoon in question. The article reads:

Undercreek Water Magnate to Host Lavish Anniversary Party for Elites

The seventeenth of June, may not be a date that seems important to most, but the date is of most importance to a Sir Malcolm S. Dawnsworth IV. The founding member and current chairman of Dawnsworth Water started his now national water distribution project on that very date back in 1869. To celebrate the fifteen years of shrewd money-making, Dawnsworth has on short notice decided to host a gargantuan party for what is surmised to be exclusively for the cultural elite.

The full guest list has not been revealed, but amongst the confirmed party-goers are the Undercreek mayor Laurence Hatchet, train mogul Monique Domínguez, famous Drimgonese author Elian Rivas, and even Septan Princess Eleanora Anne-Lise Großschmidt auf Septland.

Hatchet and Rivas have been confirmed to attend the party, while Domínguez declined the invitation, stating that she "didn't have time for such occasions doing the busy summer season". It is yet unconfirmed whether Her Highness Eleanora will attend.

Undercreek Tribune asked for comments from Dawnsworth about the occasion, to which he replied:

"From a young lad, my father told me I was destined for greatness, and I can with certainty tell you that he was correct. Building up minor wealth from my father's logging industry I soon moved to the cutthroat Manifest Belt, where regulations were lax and competition fierce. Here I used my mere savings to build an underground water pumping system to bring water cheaply and efficiently to the masses of these barren lands. And now a small fifteen years later, my small upstart company, built with minimal resources and a heck of a lot of drive, stands as an empire whose only goal is to give the people the water they deserve and need. That accomplishment of helping the people of one of the roughest and harshest places in the world to live is what this celebration is for."

When asked for what kind of events and activities the party will have Dawnsworth refused to answer, stating:

"Oh no, no, my dear madam. It would be a shame to reveal the surprises of my party to all of my esteemed guests."

Dawnsworth party will be held at his manor, and it is estimated to financially be quite a boon to Undercreek. However, it is not everyone who is excited about the party.

"So, we're supposed to look at the water tyrant host a bunch of fat cats, stuffing their faces in fancy food, while the rest of us work and toil day after day to be able to afford a cup of water?" said a member of the Dawnsworth Water protest group Citizens Against Water Scarcity who requested to remain anonymous.

The group has entered their third month of protest despite the pressure from Dawnsworth Water trying to illegalize it.

You've never really understood parties. It seems like such a waste of time and money. You're not surprised that people lack water out here, and you're certainly not surprised that someone is trying to control the water. You put down the paper.
