Two schools of thought

"There are really two schools of thought on that." The voice in the ring explains. "The first says that the correct answer is somewhere between three and six, at least in terms of optimizing the ratios between time and effort and power. It's about finding a balance between the strength of your soul and the strength of your abilities. If you are only focusing on a single ability, that ability will end up growing faster than your soul, which then becomes a bottleneck preventing you from using your ability to its full potential. If you have too many abilities, then your soul will grow faster than any given one of them, which is a waste of magic potential since your soul would be able to take on much more than you are asking it to do. The sweet spot is between three and six, with one or two of them being the primary abilities you plan to focus on and the others being secondary abilities meant to support or add convenience to your primary abilities. If your soul and your abilities grow at approximately the same rate then there is nothing wasted and your growth will be steady."

"The second school of thought says that trying to optimize like that is foolish. Asking how many powers you should have is like asking how many things you should bring camping in the woods. The answer is always to just take what you will need. Some people go camping with just a knife, while others bring a trailer full of stuff, and neither of them is wrong. I've mentored heroes that were extraordinarily capable despite only learning a singular ability, as well as those who were perfectly satisfied with a hodgepodge of over a dozen seemingly unrelated abilities. Decide what kind of Hero you want to be and what sorts of things you want to be able to do, and then figure out what powers you'll need to accomplish those goals."

"I'm personally more inclined towards that second school of thought." The voice in the ring admits. "Just ask yourself what you want to be able to do, and I can help you figure out the specifics from there. Don't worry about trying to find the best possible answer because there isn't one."
