Narrowing down your choices

Chapter 10 by BenSmittWriter

"What do I want to be able to do?" You repeat to yourself. It seems like a simple enough question, but with endless possibilities to choose from it's hard to avoid being overwhelmed.

Just to get yourself started, you open up your laptop and start searching through various superpowers, creating a document with a list of any that jump out at you. As you do this, you and the voice in the ring engage in some small talk. The voice in the ring mentions that, although he doesn't consider it to be a huge deal, he does still consider himself to be male despite no longer having a biological sex. For ease of conversation, you decide to start calling him Drake, a name he seems completely ambivalent about.

Drake answers questions you have about the various powers you read about, explaining some pros and cons, how they might work, or how hard they would be to implement. When you ask about it he categorically rules out 'time travel' as a potential power simply because it is still beyond his ability to give out. His own pseudo-random time travel only works because of his enormous personal power combined with his nigh-indestructible body, and unless he makes a breakthrough of some kind in implementing it, there is no way a human would be able to do it. He also highly recommends not taking 'Luck' as a power when he sees you add that to your list. He says he actually could give it to you, but it uses a tremendous amount of power for an almost undetectable effect, and it's nearly impossible to tell whether or not it actually does anything.

Over the next hour or so, as you continue brainstorming on your computer, you start to get to know each other. You tell Drake about your life, your living situation, and your schedule. You mention that you rent a small apartment and that your schedule is very erratic. As an actor you end up recording a lot of self-tapes or attending auditions, but very rarely are you given much advance notice on anything. If you manage to get cast in something you will need to adapt your schedule around their timetable. Much of being an actor involves standing by and just keeping yourself ready and available in case things come up.

Eventually you end up with an enormous list of potential powers which you find yourself struggling to narrow down. "The important thing isn't how powerful an ability is; it's how compatible it is with you. These are things you are going to be writing onto your very soul. You're an actor, right? Think about what motivates you, what drives you, and use that to make your decision." Drake advises you.

You take that in and consider it. You are an actor, aren't you? You've always been an actor. That's why you dropped out of college. That's why you aren't on speaking terms with your family. That's why you dropped everything and moved to Hollywood. You have dedicated the past ten years to becoming a successful actor. That's what you should be using to narrow down your choices.

Reading over what you have, you begin cutting down your list until only a few remain.
