Two EXTREMELY broke girls

Marilyn and Cat were looking for anything at this point as they scoured through online job postings. Marilyn groaned and said, “Fuuuuuuck…we were supposed to have jobs after finishing our Masters, Cat. We got bills to pay in less than a month…”Marilyn was rubbing her temples as she closed her laptop. Both girls had met in freshmen year and were journalism majors that decided to stay the extra two years to ensure that they gave themselves the best chance at a job. The market was a lot less saturated they what they expected and five months after graduating has them settling for just about anything at this point.

Cat smiled from behind her screen and said, “Don’t give up hope just yet, my friend. I think I have an answer to both of our problems. How about waitressing for a diner? We meet their qualifications being young and attractive and our degree is a plus.”

Marilyn chuckled and asked, “Are young and attractive really qualifications on their job posting? That’s a bit of a red flag…”

Cat chuckled and continued speaking, “Before you rudely interjected your two cents, you didn’t hear how much we would be making. Pay starts at $30 an hour and we keep our tips.”

Marilyn was much more interested now and said, “What are our requirements for this job?”

Cat listed them off, “Positive attitude and diligent worker. That’s it…”

Marilyn felt something was off but the pay was better than anything they had seen. The student loans would be calling soon and they also needed to pay for all of their other bills as well. She said, “Well I’ll apply with you so that we can at least have each others back to make sure nothing strange happens.” Cat nodded as she applied for the job and Marilyn reopened her laptop to fill out her own application. Both felt like a little luck was coming their way and hoped that they would not be another job saying the girls were overqualified.

An hour later, both girls received the email that they were hoping for:

Good afternoon xxxx

We are happy to announce that we would like to schedule a meeting for as early as this afternoon to give you a chance to start working ASAP. Please write back if that sounds good as we wish to start this partnership immediately.

Future Boss

Both girls chuckled as Marilyn asked, “Why did they call themselves future boss and not their name? Something feels off…”

Cat was already responding that they would be there in the hour without really consulting Marilyn. Cat cut her off and said, “Alright! I let them know we will be there soon.”

Marilyn was a bit shocked and said, “W-wait! What!? C’mon something seems off about this.”

Cat shook her head and said, “We don’t have many options here. Do you have money to pay for anything next month?” Marilyn shook her head as she continued, “Exactly. I don’t have anything left either so stop worrying and let’s just do this job until something in journalism opens up.” Cat got a reply with the address as well as another small message of dress however they wanted as a uniform would be provided.

Cat was wearing a t shirt and jeans while Marilyn was wearing yoga pants and sports bra with a jacket. She zipped up her jacket as Cat grabbed her keys and practically pushed her roommate out the door. Marilyn felt off about everything but hoped her mind was just playing tricks on her.
