Chapter 55 by bastian
What does she say?
Twist of Fate
Persephone stands on the dais, pale and regal, her presence dominating the room despite her vulnerability. Her voice rises, clear and commanding, silencing all murmurs.
“For far too long, we have fought among ourselves. Killed and betrayed one another, and for what?”
Her piercing gaze sweeps the room, lingering briefly on Viola, who sits rigid, her hands gripping the arms of her chair as though to steady herself. Behind her, Anora leans forward, placing a hand gently on Viola’s shoulder.
Viola stiffens, her icy blue eyes narrowing. With a sharp jerk of her shoulder, she shakes Anora off angrily. The younger woman recoils, her auburn curls bouncing as she retreats, a flicker of hurt flashing across her face.
“Power? Pride? Glory?” Persephone’s voice deepens, each word laced with disdain. She plucks the crown from her head, holding it aloft for all to see.
Then, with a sudden, defiant motion, she casts it to the ground. The golden circlet clangs against the stone floor, the sound reverberating like the toll of a bell.
“No more,” she declares softly but with a finality that demands attention.
The chamber falls deathly silent. Even Viola, her lips parted to speak, finds herself speechless.
“Duchess Viola Valancia, Duchess Alexandra Turo, Duchess Sophia Duccato, and Duchess Lucrecia Caldersmith,” Persephone calls, her voice carrying authority. “Kneel.”
The four women rise from their seats with varying expressions. Alexandra, barely eighteen, looks nervous, her tight red braid swaying with each step she takes. Sophia, broad-shouldered and confident, strides forward with a resolute expression. Lucrecia ascends with deliberate grace, her years of experience etched into her sharp features. Viola, last to move, rises with cold dignity, her hands still clenched at her sides.
“What is the meaning of this?” Viola demands, her voice sharp with anger. “You got the crown, and...” Her gaze flickers toward you, sitting at the foot of the dais, exposed and ****. “You even got him.”
“Sister,” Persephone says, extending a hand toward her, her tone both firm and imploring. “It is true that I took the crown, but not to rule as Queen.”
“Then why did you?” Alexandra asks, her voice trembling as she breaks the silence.
“I took it to break it,” Persephone replies. “To reforge our nation into something stronger. Something more equitable. Something united.”
She raises her hand, silencing Viola’s retort before it can leave her lips.
“Sister,” Persephone continues, “I propose that the five of us set aside our grievances and instead rule together—not as rivals, but as allies. Five women, equal in power, united in purpose.”
The gathered nobles erupt in murmurs and gasps. Katarina steps forward, her voice booming over the noise. “SILENCE!”
Order restored, Persephone addresses Alexandra first. “What say you, Alexandra? Will you kneel and rule with me?”
The young duchess hesitates, her hands trembling as she smooths her skirts. After a moment’s pause, she steps forward, her emerald eyes fixed on Persephone. Lowering herself to her knees, she bows her head. “Yes, Your Majesty,” she whispers, her voice steady despite her nerves.
Persephone nods approvingly and turns to the others. “Lucrecia, Sophia, will you join us?”
Sophia grins broadly and approaches without hesitation. Dropping to one knee, she places a fist over her heart. “Equals,” she declares, her voice firm, before bowing her head in deference.
Lucrecia remains standing, her hawk-like gaze fixed on Persephone.
“Lucrecia?” Persephone prompts, her voice calm but insistent.
The elder duchess finally speaks, her voice carrying the weight of wisdom. “No,” she says simply.
A gasp ripples through the chamber.
“I am too old for this new order,” Lucrecia continues. “Leadership is a young woman’s game.” She turns to the crowd and gestures toward her daughter. “Victoria will serve in my place. She is wise beyond her years and will represent House Caldersmith faithfully.”
The crowd buzzes with whispers as Victoria, her brunette hair cascading in soft waves, rises hesitantly. Her wide eyes dart nervously to her mother, who gives her a firm nod. With trembling steps, Victoria approaches the dais and kneels before Persephone.
“I accept on behalf of House Caldersmith,” she says, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Welcome, sister,” Persephone says warmly, a flicker of relief crossing her face.
Her gaze shifts to Viola, who stands rigid, her jaw tight.
“And you,” Persephone says, her voice softening. “My greatest rival. Will you kneel before me and set aside our grievances to rule with me?”
Viola hesitates, her gaze flitting between Persephone and the audience. Her eyes flicker downward, lingering for a moment on the pale thighs of the Queen, where evidence of your recent coupling gleams faintly in the light. Her lips curl into a faint snarl.
Anora leans forward again, her expression pleading, but Viola shrugs her off with a harsh motion.
“On one condition,” Viola says, her voice low and trembling with restrained fury. “I must have him.”
Persephone’s composure falters for the briefest of moments before she steels herself.
“This male,” Persephone announces to the chamber, her voice firm, “is not for any one of us alone. His seed will bind us, and the daughters born of this union will solidify our unity.”
The chamber erupts into chaos, but Persephone’s raised hand silences the room once more.
“What say you, Viola?”
Viola’s jaw tightens. After a long moment, she steps forward, her movements deliberate. Dropping to one knee before Persephone, she bows her head.
“Then it is done,” Persephone declares. The chamber erupts in cheers as the five women kneel in unity before their queen.
