Truth
A Dream Come True
A fall morning in Vancouver, yellow leaves crunched beneath Kara’s feet. Her bag was on her shoulder, but her mind was elsewhere; in the same bright room of her dream. She had dreamed again the night before: Daphne’s arms, a soft diaper, warm milk. She had woken up with tears on her cheeks and her heart pounding.
At the café near the university, Daphne had arrived early. She was sipping her coffee and smiling when she saw Kara. But Kara couldn’t help but smile. She sat down, clasped her hands on the table, and took a deep breath.
“Daphne… I need to tell you something.”
Daphne put the spoon aside. “What’s wrong, Kara? You’re pale.”
Kara stared at her cup. The tears came again. “I… I love being a baby. Not like a baby’s game… really. I want someone to take care of me, hold me, change my diaper, feed me. Like a real baby.”
Silence. Daphne’s eyes widened. Not in fear, in pure surprise. Her mouth hung open, as if she wanted to say something but the words were lost.
Cara wiped away her tears. “I know it’s weird. I know I might sound crazy. But you’re the only one I trust. You always smile at me, you always listen… I just… I want you to be there. You to watch over me. Just once. You’re not just in my dreams, you’re real.”
Daphne was still silent. She placed her hand gently on Kara’s. Her fingers were warm. “Cara… I… I didn’t expect this.”
Kara lowered her head. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said it. Forget it—”
“No.” Daphne squeezed her hand. “I mean… I need to think. This is big. This is a big trust you’ve given me. I don’t want to rush and ruin it.”
Kara looked into Daphne’s eyes. There was no fear in them, just kindness and a little hidden excitement. Daphne took a deep breath.
“Come to my house tomorrow night. We’ll be alone. We’ll have a simple dinner, talk. Then… if you still want to, we’ll start. Slowly. No pressure. Just care.”
Kara wiped away her tears and smiled for the first time. “Thank you… thank you for not saying no.”
Daphne returned her smile. “I said I had to think. But my heart is saying right now… maybe this is the most beautiful thing you’ve ever trusted me with.”
And under the table, their hands were still intertwined.
