Chapter 35

What's next?
Treasure
The two of them walked close together, their footsteps echoing faintly through the oppressive silence of the labyrinth.
Venetia’s torch burned steadily, its flickering flame casting shifting shadows on the cold, stone walls around them.
The light offered little comfort, only revealing more of the labyrinth’s unyielding, desolate expanse.
Each corner they turned seemed to promise a way forward, but the twisting, winding paths led them deeper into uncertainty.
Venetia moved cautiously, her sharp eyes scanning for any cracks in the walls, loose stones, or faint breezes that might hint at a hidden passage.
Yuki followed closely behind, her bow at the ready, her ears twitching at every small sound.
“Another dead end,” Venetia muttered, frustration lacing her tone as they came face-to-face with yet another blank wall.
She raised the torch higher as if the light might somehow reveal a hidden way through, but there was nothing. Just stone—cold, unyielding stone.
Yuki’s shoulders slumped, her tail flicking nervously as she glanced back down the path they had come. “This place is endless! How are we supposed to find Draco in all of this?”
Venetia tightened her grip on the torch“There has to be a way down, a way to him. We just haven’t found it yet.”
Her words carried a determined edge, but deep down, the weight of the labyrinth’s endless corridors gnawed at her resolve.
They retraced their steps, the light of the torch flickering as it illuminated the path ahead.
“We’ll find him,” Venetia said suddenly as if trying to dispel the growing tension.
“This place may be a maze, but it’s not impossible. We’ll figure it out.”
They pressed on, turning corner after corner, their hopes rising with each new path they explored—only to be dashed again when another promising route ended in an unyielding wall. The labyrinth was relentless, a maze designed to confuse and dishearten, but Venetia refused to give in.
As they moved deeper into its twisting corridors, the air grew colder, the walls narrowing slightly as if the labyrinth was closing in around them.
Ventia led them deeper and deeper into the labyrinth, her torchlight dancing against the cold, stony walls.
Her eyes scanned every corner, every shadow, searching for traps or signs of Draco. But amidst her growing tension, her focus wavered for just a moment—a moment too long.
As she rounded a corner, a sharp snap pierced the silence.
Venetia’s eyes widened, her instincts screaming at her just as Yuki lunged forward with startling speed.
Yuki tackled Venetia to the ground, the impact knocking the wind out of her lungs.
"Stay down!" she hissed, pressing Venetia flat against the cold stone.
Venetia barely had time to register what had happened when a sharp, metallic whistle cut through the air.
An arrow shot past them, narrowly missing their heads.
It struck the wall with terrifying ****, embedding itself deep in the stone.
A hiss followed as the tip of the arrow dissolved part of the wall in a sickening sizzle, leaving a small, jagged crater in its wake. The acidic stench of corroded stone filled the air.
For a moment, neither of them moved, their breathing heavy, their hearts pounding like war drums in their chest.
Venetia could feel her heart thudding against her ribs, the weight of Yuki's quick thinking sinking in.
“That… would’ve been me,” Venetia muttered, her voice unsteady but filled with gratitude.
Yuki climbed off her, her cat-like ears twitching, her sharp eyes scanning the area for further danger. “You were about to trigger more than that arrow,” she said, her tone cautious but firm.
She gestured toward the barely visible, thin tripwire that Venetia had unknowingly crossed. “There could be more traps like this.”
Venetia sat up slowly, still shaken, brushing dust off. “Thanks. I owe you one,” she said, trying to steady her breath.
They both stood up and continued the way.
Venetia held her hand up and created a small wind slash that would intercept any wire but would also consume little Mana.
Just as she anticipated something snapped and two massive axes came from the Wall.
They were waiting for the axes to lose their momentum before they could go through them.
"Why are there so many Traps here?" Yuki asked, quickly going through the now still Axes.
"Don’t know. Maybe something important is here?" Venetia replied, scanning the area for a trap. The labyrinth was relentless, and she wasn’t about to let her guard down now.
“There!” Yuki exclaimed, her voice brimming with excitement as she pointed ahead.
Venetia squinted into the dim torchlight, barely able to make out what Yuki was gesturing toward.
As they moved closer, the object took shape—a wooden box reinforced with iron, sitting inconspicuously on the floor.
“What is that?” Yuki asked, stepping closer to the strange object. She crouched slightly, inspecting the ground around it, but nothing seemed out of the ordinary. “It doesn’t look like a trap... but why is it just sitting here?”
Venetia stepped forward, eyeing the worn wood and rusted iron bands curiously. “I think is a treasure Cheast ?”
Yuki’s ears perked up at the word. “A treasure chest? "
Venetia nodded, though her expression darkened slightly as she continued.
“When I was a kid, my parents told me stories about these,” she said, her voice quieter now. “They’re supposed to harbor gold, gems or even rare items."
"Yeah my Tribe Elders told me about them, they said that there would be some cool stuff in them."
"Now let's see what is inside you," Yuki said with a grin, her curiosity getting the better of her. She swung the chest open, expecting to find treasure inside.
At first, the chest looked ordinary—just an old wooden container with rusted metal reinforcements.
But then, something strange began to happen.
The moment Yuki lifted the lid, a sickening, wet sound echoed from within. The interior of the chest seemed to distort as if the wood was warping and shifting.
The wooden walls inside the chest rippled, the smooth surface turning rough and gnarled as though veins of dark, purple flesh were slowly growing underneath.
The air became thick with a strange, putrid odor.
The soft, quiet hum of something alive came from within, then suddenly—slap!—a large, slimy tongue shot out from the dark recesses of the chest.
It whipped around violently, striking the air with unnatural ****. The tongue was long, covered in ridges and glistening with a slick sheen, as it darted toward Yuki.
Her heart raced, and before she could react, the wooden chest began to deform further.
The lid opened wider, revealing the fleshy, grotesque mass that had once been the interior of the chest.
Several lines of the became visible to Yuki, each of them sharp and deadly.
The walls of the chest seemed to swell as if the creature inside consumed the wood.
A single, grotesque eye slowly emerged from the chest’s lid, its bloodshot pupil narrowing and locking onto Yuki’s startled face.
The eye gleamed with malicious intent, studying her with unnerving precision.
She staggered back in shock, nearly tripping over her feet as the creature inside the chest stirred, its body pulsing with hunger.
The gust of wind from Venetia’s spell hit the mimic, sending it crashing back against the wall with a loud crash.
The creature let out a distorted growl, its tongue flicking back into the chest in retreat, but its eye never left it.
Yuki quickly dashed back to Venetia, her voice breathless. “What the hell is that thing?”
Venetia’s face had gone pale, her eyes wide with shock. “I don’t know, but I think it does not look good.”
The grotesque tongue shot out again, its sickly purple flesh glistening under the dim light of Venetia’s torch.
The sound it made—a wet, slimy squelch—sent a shiver down her spine as it coiled through the air, aiming straight for her.
Venetia’s heart pounded, her instincts screaming at her to move.
“Not this time,” she hissed, snapping her hand up as wind gathered around her fingertips.
With a sharp swing of her arm, Venetia summoned a blade of air, the whoosh of its formation cutting through the tense silence.
"Wind Ball!" she cried, her voice echoing through the stone corridor.
The shimmering Ball launched forward, spinning rapidly like an invisible saw, its edges sharp enough to slice through solid stone.
The mimic’s tongue collided with the wind slash mid-air.
For a moment, the grotesque appendage resisted, the **** of the wind straining against its unnatural durability.
The pressure pushed the tongue backward, and purple blood spewed from its wounds.
Portions of it tore off with a sickening rip, flopping to the ground like a dead eel.
Venetia didn’t stop to celebrate. Sweat beaded on her forehead as she extended her hand, conjuring a flurry of smaller, razor-like blades of air.
Each one zipped through the air in rapid succession, targeting the still-writhing tongue.
The mimic growled in fury, its lid rattling and the sound reverberating like wood grating against a tone.
The tongue writhed, contorting unnaturally to avoid the barrage of wind blades.
One blade sliced across its surface, leaving a deep gash. Another grazed it near the base, causing more of the monster’s viscous ichor to ooze onto the floor.
Yet the mimic refused to be overwhelmed.
Even as the damage accumulated, its tongue regenerated—fresh flesh bubbling grotesquely into place, knitting itself back together faster than Venetia could attack.
“Why won’t it stop?!” she growled, frustration mounting as the wind magic consumed her mana reserves.
Suddenly, the mimic countered.
The tongue lashed out, quicker this time, surging straight through Venetia’s next wind slash as though it had adapted to the attacks.
Venetia’s breath hitched barely dodging the first strike. "It seems to solely focus on me and not Yuki!"
She ducked and twisted, her movements fluid but the tongue scraped her shoulder, leaving a line of purple slime on her skin.
Before she could react, it snapped toward her from a different angle, smacking her across the midsection and forcing the air from her lungs as she staggered backward.
“Venetia!” Yuki shouted, her voice sharp with panic.
Venetia coughed, clutching her stomach as she stumbled to one knee.
The pain surged through her, but she gritted her teeth, refusing to give in.
Her right hand slammed against the cold ground, forcing herself to focus and steady her breathing.
The other hand still held the torch aloft, its flickering flame casting long shadows against the labyrinth walls
. It was as though she were saying to the monster, to the darkness itself: "You can't defeat me."
Her hair whipped wildly as the wind spiraled around her body.
The mimic’s grotesque tongue recoiled momentarily, twitching as though it sensed the sudden energy shift.
Its single, glaring eye blinked in confusion—or perhaps wariness—as the winds howled around Venetia.
Yuki sprinted to Venetia’s side, her face creased with concern as she crouched next to her.
“Everything okay?” Yuki asked quickly, though her gaze darted warily to the mimic’s tongue, which hovered in the air like a serpent ready to strike.
Venetia wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, managing a shaky but confident grin.
“Yeah, I’ve been through worse. The first time I fought Draco, he landed a hit on me. This tongue? Nothing compared to that.”
Yuki blinked at the unexpected comment, momentarily thrown off. “What? Seriously? Now’s the time to brag?”
Venetia ignored the remark, eyes sharpening as the mimic’s tongue recoiled, curling like a coiled whip ready to strike again.
“Listen,” she said firmly. “We can’t keep playing this game. Its tongue regenerates, which means we’re wasting energy fighting it head-on.”
Yuki’s gaze darted between Venetia and the mimic’s writhing form. “So what do we do? You’ve got a plan, right?”
Venetia nodded, her expression grave.
“I’ll keep it distracted. Its attention is on me and my magic, so I’ll use that to buy you an opening.
You’re fast—when I give you the chance, you take this torch and burn it. Aim for the main body. It won’t recover from that.”
She said while Holding the torch out for Yuki.
Yuki hesitated, her eyes darting to the torch blazing in Venetia’s hand. “Burn it? What if—”
“Trust me!” Venetia barked, cutting her off. “We don’t have time to argue. Just move when I tell you!”
The mimic’s tongue lashed out again, its grotesque length hurtling toward Venetia with unnatural speed.
“Yuki!” Venetia shouted, her voice ringing through the corridor. “Get ready!”
Yuki clenched her fists, her pulse racing as she watched Venetia raise the torch higher.
The wind around Venetia roared, becoming a swirling tempest of sharp currents that cut through the air like blades.
The mimic’s tongue whipped forward, only to be thrown back by the relentless wind storm, unable to break through Venetia’s defenses.
“Now!” Venetia roared
Yuki didn’t hesitate. Her heart pounded in her chest as Venetia’s voice roared over the wind, and she pushed off the ground with everything she had.
Sprinting forward, her feet barely touched the cold, stone floor as she raced past Venetia, and took the Torch from her Hands.
"I watched you Run when you stole our fish," thought Venetia as she looked at the Back of the cat-human.
"I would be fatooto slow, and Draco would be too stiff but you. You are the only one who could do that.
That way the only thing you need to do is to RUN"
The mimic’s grotesque tongue snapped forward, whipping through the air with deadly speed.
It lashed out in wide arcs, aiming to intercept her, but Venetia’s magic held firm.
Gusts of sharp wind struck the tongue mid-swing, forcing it back or slicing small chunks off its regenerating flesh.
Yuki ducked low, her body nimble and light, weaving through gaps in the tongue’s **** like water slipping through cracks.
Her focus narrowed to the wooden body of the mimic, its singular bulging eye now shifting frantically to track her movements.
The mimic let out a guttural screech, its maw splitting wider as the purple tongue flailed with renewed desperation.
It lashed toward her again, this time striking from the side with a speed she hadn’t anticipated.
“Yuki, now!” Venetia’s voice rang out like a blade slicing through the chaos.
Yuki spun mid-stride, twisting her body to the side just in time to avoid the tongue’s strike.
It barely missed her, as she felt the **** of its movement stir the air around her as the tongue hit the WalHe.
he landed in a crouch, panting as adrenaline surged through her veins. The mimic’s tongue jerked back and curled to strike again—but Venetia’s magic arrived like a storm.
With a furious roar of wind, Venetia unleashed one final, concentrated blast.
The gust struck the tongue head-on, forcing it to recoil and pinning it to the mimic’s maw for the briefest of moments.
“Now or never!” Venetia cried, her voice strained as she fought to maintain the spell.
Yuki surged forward with a burst of speed, her grip tightening around the torch in her hand.
She felt the warmth of its flame licking at her fingers as she neared the mimic’s base.
Its massive eye widened in panic, the grotesque maw gaping open to reveal the writhing, fleshy insides lined with glistening, teeth."
The tongue quivered, struggling to break free, but Venetia’s winds damaged it severely."
“Take this!” Yuki shouted, and with all her strength, she thrust the torch straight into the mimic’s mouth.
The flame flared violently as it touched the mimic’s insides.
For a split second, there was silence—a terrible stillness—as the torch sank into the creature’s depths.
Then, with a screech that made Yuki’s ears ring, the mimic convulsed.
The fire spread rapidly, the orange glow illuminating its body from the inside.
Purple flesh sizzled and blackened, the flames devouring everything in their path.
Smoke billowed out of the mimic’s mouth and seams, pouring into the air like a dark fog.
Its wooden exterior cracked and splintered, splinters flying outward as the mimic thrashed violently, its once-powerful tongue falling limp and twitching uselessly against the floor.
Yuki staggered back, releasing the torch as the mimic’s **** throes rattled the ground beneath her.
She stumbled and nearly fell, but Venetia’s winds eased just in time to keep her on her feet.
The mimic let out one final, horrific screech before collapsing inward, its monstrous body consumed entirely by the blaze.
All that remained was a smoldering, broken husk of charred wood and ash.
Yuki stood there, panting, her hands trembling as she stared at the remains of the monster. Her chest rose and fell rapidly, the adrenaline still coursing through her veins.
Venetia let out a long, shaky breath, the winds around her dying down as her magic faded.
She dropped to her knees, sweat dripping from her brow, but her lips curved into a faint smile. “You did it.”
Yuki exhaled sharply, wiping the back of her hand across her forehead. “Yeah… we did it,” she muttered, slumping against the stone wall for support.
Her voice trembled slightly, but her grin was triumphant. “Remind me… to never open random chests again.”
Venetia chuckled weakly, leaning her head back against the wall as well. “Agreed… No more treasure hunts… at least not without Draco.”
For a while, the two of them sat in silence, catching their breath. The only sound was the faint crackling of the dying flames and the distant echoes of the labyrinth.
Venetia’s gaze drifted toward the husk of the mimic, her expression hardening slightly. “If that thing was here… there’s no telling what else might be lurking in this place.”
Yuki glanced at her, the light of the torch reflecting in her eyes. “Then we’d better stay sharp. We’ve still got to find Draco… and get out of this nightmare.”
They both let out a small laugh at the Situation they've found themselves in.
However, they were suddenly taken back, when they heard rumbling around the Labyrinth as if something big was beginning to move.
