Chapter 96 by Jpyric Jpyric

You nod, and the journey continues with quiet conversations between the girls.

Travel conversation

While you walk, Melora fills you in on what you missed, with Alex providing some extra commentary. While Ferra’s reaction to your abduction isn’t necessarily surprising, you’re still amazed at the depth of her emotions. What’s more, her devotion to you is incredibly touching, and every time you glance at her walking beside you, there’s a smile on her face.

Meanwhile, Cassie has latched on to Sarah immediately, the excitable young chameleon girl talking nonstop about everything from her adventures so far to the fun she’s been having in the bedroom. Seemingly a bit overwhelmed at first, before long the hellhound girl opens up, and their laughter soon draws Alex into their conversation. You’re happy to see the quick acceptance of Sarah as a member of the group, and when she flashes a happy smile towards you, you can tell she feels the same way.

Victor is mostly quiet, seemingly content to lead the way. You can’t help but wonder what the normally taciturn panther man thinks of this situation, but you’re thankful for his presence. Despite his serious disposition, he’s a good friend, and a competent leader.

After several hours, you reach a small clearing, as evening begins to fall. Your group sets up camp, and settles in around a fire that Alex helpfully lights. Once everyone has eaten, you turn towards Melora.

“So, now that we’re set for the night, why don’t you tell us what you’ve learned.”

Melora nods, pausing to gather her thoughts. “Between what we already know, what Nicholas has said, and what I learned today, it seems like the Great One’s mind is shattering. The strain of holding in the corruption is slowly driving him insane. Even now, his power struggles to project beyond the palace walls.”

You nod. “He seemed lucid enough when I spoke with him.”

Melora shakes her head. “And I don’t think the news you brought helped his sanity. But to continue, the three we know as the Council are his longest serving Chosen, and so have all been affected by his corruption. Any time they leave the palace, beyond his influence, it takes a deeper hold.”

Victor speaks up. “That would explain why Kaeli is least affected, being confined to the palace.”

Melora nods. “And from what I can tell, she’s the last of them who holds her mind completely in tact. Niran is nearly as insane as his master, and Victoria seems to have lost any compassion she once had. I caught fleeting images of the three of them as heroic figures in the Great One’s mind, perhaps as they once were.”

Ferra speaks quietly. “Kaeli spoke of wishing for ****, when I threatened her.”

Melora shrugs. “I’m simply speculating, but I imagine that within the palace, the Great One sustains their lives. None of them are as young as they seem.”

You think for a moment. “And what happens if the Great One dies, or goes insane completely?”

Melora shakes her head. “I don’t know, but he’s all that keeps the corruption contained for now.”

Sarah interjects at this point. “I can answer some of that. Whenever anything dies, it’s energy is released into the world. For most, it’s unnoticeable. Incredibly powerful creatures can cause magic to run wild for a time upon their ****. A being like the Great One, dying without something to contain his released power, would be catastrophic. Add to that that the corruption would spread unchecked, and it’s a horrifying thought.”

You sigh. “And not one we’re dealing with right now. For now, let’s focus on getting home safe. And that means getting some rest.”

No one can disagree with that, and everyone heads to bed.
