Chapter 23 by Torel Torel

What's next?

Tower of Ishal

As they helped you back on your feet, you looked around and the bodies of your dead comrades were already gone. They proceeded to explain what happened and apologize for not being to be upfront with you immediately. Alistair mentioned that during his joining only one of the other recruits died but it is still difficult to bear witness such a thing. Nevertheless the darkspawn army was but a few hours away and there was still a lot of preparation to do. You had some time to take a breather and rest before you were required at the war table. So with the two of them leaving, you sit down and ponder about what just happened. Quietly breathing with your head hanging low and eyes closed, you slowly get up and join the war table.

As you get close, the conversation is already in full swing. Loghain and Cailan are in deep strife about the movement and tactics of the armies, Uldred, a mage from the tower voices his concerns while the Grey Wardens stand aside, waiting. Once you get close, the king interrupts all conversation to congratulate you which you obviously welcome and properly thank him for. Afterwards, Cailan leaves no one else talking as he continues to explain the strategy and others are **** to listen. Soon it comes to your task. You and Alistair are to climb the Tower of Ishal and light the fire when the right time comes. The signal is known to Alistair and it will give Loghain's troops the green light to flank the darkspawn. This leads to the end of discussions and you together with Alistair and Duncan walk back to the fire.

Here you say your goodbyes as Duncan will join the king in the main battle. Alistair eager to join as well is quickly shut down by Duncan and afterwards is **** to keep to his task. You wish each other luck as Duncan leaves to join the king as you and Alistair wait and prepare for maybe your hardest day of your lives.

Not even half an hour later, the main bulks of both forces fight and kill each other in an all out battle. You along with Alistair are on a massive bridge which you first crossed when you got to Ostagar. You have never seen this many darkspawn all in one place. Their savage and monstrous cries are occasionally interrupted by loud yells of brave men and women who fight for the good of Ferelden. Nevertheless, to complete your mission you have to move. You quickly run behind squads of archers positioned on the bridge and once you get to the other side, two guards run out, covered in blood. You find out that the darkspawn managed to dig a tunnel underground in an effort to flank and now have overtaken the tower. The guards join you as you muster the courage and go forth to face off against your enemies.

Slowly you climb. Floor after floor you kill every darkspawn you see even though they do not make it easy for you. You encounter many different types of darkspawn, even some that cast spells, similarly to you but with your magical prowess and the strength of three mighty warriors, you put them all to ground until you finally reach the very top of the tower of Ishal.

As you reach the top, monstrous grunts and heavy shakes stop you in your tracks. In the far end corner of the room, you see a hulking figure, taller than any living thing you have ever seen. The ogre, upon noticing your presence it turns around and you see blood dripping out of it's mouth and from it's hand. You soon realize where the blood is coming from as he tosses away a lifeless and half eaten corpse of another guard before roaring and charging at you. With your magical element you quickly create a glyph of paralysis under him and it stuns the creature but not for as long as you would like. The other three managed to get a couple of hits in but soon they found themselves under a barrage of hard hits. Their shields looked like they were about to crack and even their armor seemed to dent from the impacts but any injury they sustained you quickly managed to heal. Those lyrium potions you made were very useful as without them you would have ran out of mana by now. But even with such a long, bloody and difficult battle, you focused all of your energy into a singular arcane bolt which actually pierced the ogre's leg, forcing to come down on one knee which Alistair quickly used for his own benefit. He climb up on those big meaty arms and managed to latch himself on the neck of the creature, slashing and hacking at the back of his neck before a one final pierce killed the hulking creature.

The four of you breathe heavily and treat your wounds as Alistair notices the signal from an opened window. You go and light the fire, thinking that the battle is going all according to plan but in reality you just doomed the whole army. Unbeknownst to you, Loghain retreated his army the moment he saw you light the fire and abandoned the king, the troops and also... Duncan.

You gave a final patch of healing to your comrades and were getting ready to go down and help clean up when all of a sudden a massive squad of darkspawn surprised you. A volley of arrows hit you and that searing pain has soon knocked you ****.
