Chapter 3 by Sarckle Sarckle

Tomoko Shiretoko, Ragdoll of the Wild, Wild Pussycats

Your family’s annual ski trip is an event you look forward to every year. Your parents would take your sister and you on a ski trip every year ever since your sister, Akasuki, has been old enough to stand on skis. This year is special, your family is celebrating your sister’s graduation from her support hero class. Her quirk “Multitool” is perfect for tinkering, since she can transform parts of her body into a variety of tools.

Your parents work in real estate. Their quirks don’t come into play with their jobs. Your mother is able to use “Golden Fleece” to transform her hair into a variety of materials, but only while they’re still attached. While your father’s “Writing Instrument” allows him to turn his fingers into pens, markers, and other tools for writing.

As a kid you spent more hours than you could count trying to turn parts of your body into a variety of objects. When your younger sister’s quirk developed, it signaled what your parents had surely suspected. You are quirkless. As a kid it felt like the end of the world, you weren’t special. Watching Akasuki smash stuff with her hammer fists or dismantle the household electronics, always made you feel like you were lacking something.

Growing up you realized that being quirkless wasn’t a huge deal. Plenty of people have quirks with few uses and some even are hindered by their quirks. So it could always be worse, but right now it would be nice to have something to help you save yourself. The avalanche had come out of nowhere and now you were buried under who knows how much snow.

You’re sure Akasuki has dug her way out by use of shovel hands or melted the snow with a blow torch finger. Mom and Dad stayed at the lodge this morning so you don’t need to worry about them. Having spent most of your childhood going on ski trips, you knew what to do. The most important thing to do was to stay calm, you don’t want to use up what little air you have.

[Everybody stay calm.] What the hell was that? It sounded like somebody talking but it was inside your head. [We’re a new hero squad the Wild, Wild Pussycats. Our quirks are specialized in finding and rescuing you in these situations.] Heroes are already here? That’s great and does wonders to ease your nerves.

The minutes ticked away and still nothing. [No worries, we’re still coming. We will save you.] The now familiar voice continues to reassure you.

Are they really still coming? Maybe they can’t find you? You start to feel the panic setting in. As your breathing quickens, your mind races. You need to calm down. That’s when you hear it, a scratching sound as the snow is being dug out from above you.

“Hello, Ren Yamada.” The light pours into your dark snow hole. The light frames your rescuer, giving her an angelic look. “You doing okay down there?”

“Huh? Yeah, I’m okay.” The hero is a young woman with long emerald hair and large yellow eyes. She reaches out her hand, or paw? Her hands seem to be cat paws, must be part of her quirk.

“Hey, Ragdoll I’ve got that guy, who’s next?” a voice comes from a speaker on the hero’s body, you recognize the voice from your head.

She stops digging for a second to press a hand to her ear. “Mandalay, there is one more person 20m 20 degrees south of southwest and 1.5m under the snow.” She continued digging you out of your hole. “Alright, well even if you’re okay down there I think it’s for the best to get you out of there.”

“Ragdoll, what’s my next move?” Another voice comes from your hero’s comms.

“Pixie-Bob, that was your last rescue. You can head north and use your golems to give Tiger and his survivors a ride back to the lodge.”

“We’re waiting for you by the large tree that’s still poking up through the slide,” a manly voice comes through this time.

The hero, or Ragdoll as you’ve gathered she’s called, pulls you from the ground. “Well, Ren you’re my last rescue so I’ll walk you back to the lodge.” Ragdoll bounces and twirls around with an **** energy as the two of you start back to the ski lodge.

You watch her, her happiness seems infectious already making you forget about your recent trauma. Then your stomach drops as you see her drop through the ground. You run over to check on her, not thinking through the situation when the ground crumbles beneath you as you approach the last known location of Ragdoll. You slide down an icy slope of compacted snow before the sky above you is hidden by the collapsing snow. You land on top of Ragdoll, the only light coming from some kind of flashlight in the corner.

Even now in this new and scary scenario, Ragdoll continues to smile and laugh. “Looks like we’re in a bit of trouble once again.” Her odd looking helmet is missing. “We should probably work on getting out of here,” she says wiggling under you forcing you to snap out of it and realize that you’re laying on top of the beautiful hero.

“Oh, oh yea,” you stammer as you push yourself up and off of her. You watch as Ragdoll makes her way over to the light source in the cavern. When she picks it up, you realize it’s her helmet but it looks broken. You sincerely hope she doesn’t need that helmet to get the two of you to safety.
