Chapter 4

Okay, I don't know, maybe it's the shock of what I'm going to do to my mother, or maybe just the excitement of the MCD and its capabilities, but basically it's only logical to click on what's new and exciting. Not that the prospect of a better life with my family isn't new and exciting, but getting user and subject perks, whatever that is, is compelling enough.

I leave the list of potential subjects with a promise to myself that Rose, as nice and mean as she is, will definitely be my next choice. She has so much potential. But for now...

"Whatever" Tammy pouts in the meantime and pokes around in her breakfast, her chin resting on her hand and casting a murderous look in my direction, while Rose just wants to disappear into the ground.

“See ya!” I call, in a surprisingly good mood, shoulder my backpack and turn to the door, but then feel a hand on my shoulder. “Mom?” Almost startled, Michelle Lynchwood pulls her hand away from me and wraps it around her other hand. She can’t look me in the eye, surely an effect of the path she is on. It must be strange to suddenly be dependent on the son who you have previously only seen as the appendix of the family.

“I w-want you to come home... immediately t-today,” she stutters and chews on her lower lip.

“Why?” I ask, my voice much, much too arrogant. That brings her out of her stupor.

“Because I say so!” she hisses. “You don’t question my rules or I’ll turn off the power in your room again!” I soothingly raise my hands and approach Michelle, who steadfastly defends her place.

"It's okay, Mom," I say reassuringly. Michelle raises her eyes and looks at me questioningly. "I wanted to take a day off today anyway." To come home to you and further subjugate you, my sweet little pet.

"You won't do that!" But then she thinks for a moment and remembers that she wanted me around. "I mean..." Another shake of the head.
