Chapter 16

Where does Hal go?
To the Travelling Mage
Hal looks around the market a final time before deciding to head in the direction of the travelling mage's market stall. He makes his way through the market, past the salty smelling fish stalls, until he arrives at the mage's stall. It has been set up on the side of a large wagon, a striped cloth of purple and white draped out to protect the man standing at the stallfront from the elements. The man himself appears to be a half-elf, his honey coloured hair pulled back into a loose pontytail. He is clean shaven, and his face is unmarked by both scars and blemishes. He wears simple clothing, a forest green tunic with a leather belt and various pouches attached to it. In front of him is a wooden table, various trinkets and artefacts laid out on display.
Hal approaches the stall, smiling warmly "Good morning, do you mind if I take a look at your wares?"
The man nods slightly "Good morning, sir. You're welcome to take a look, but they are not my wares."
Hal raises an eyebrow "They're not?"
"No, sir." The half-elf says.
"They're mine." A woman's voice speaks out. The voice belongs to an elven woman, who smiles in greeting as she steps out from the back of the wagon, a box in her hands. The elf is beautiful, with deep, emerald eyes and long, auburn hair resting in gentle curls across her shoulders. She wears a form fitting outfit of comfortable leather breeches and a dark purple blouse. Her boots are are a deep brown colour and sit just above her knees. Around her neck is a long gold pendant, which match the rings on her fingers. "How can I help?"
Hal is momentarily taken aback by her beauty, but quickly regains his composure and smiles at her "I was just browsing, for now. I'm Hal."
She smiles, nodding slightly. "My name is Reynore Thenneve, but you may call me Reynore, or perhaps, Rey, if you prefer. Just don't call me Lady Thenneve like Iyanrid does." She flashes him a wider smile.
He chuckles, looking through her wares before leaning forward and picking up a silver locket on the table. "Does this have some sort of magical effect?" He asks.
"Indeed. Every artefact I sell has some sort of magical enchantment or effect. Of course, those can be altered or removed for an additional fee." She takes a closer look at the locket. "That one has a simple effect. Place something linked to a person inside it, and while wearing it, you will know if that person is alive or not. I would suggest a lock of hair, perhaps."
"Interesting. If I was to cut a lock of my own hair, and then give the locket to someone else, they'd know if I was alive, right?"
Reynore nods. "My pendant has a similar effect, but it tells me of my familiar, not a person."
Hal looks at her, unsure. "Familiar?"
"You aren't versed in the ways of magic, I take it?"
"No, Reynore, not in the slightest."
"A familiar is a magical creature connected to a mage by their very soul. Some mages have familiars as throwaways, caring little and less about them, but I care deeply about Serenity." She whistles, and a falcon flies out from the wagon, perching on her shoulder. "What do you think?"
"That..." He watches the bird, unsure, "was impressive. Tell me, do you have any items that would make a good gift? Or ones that could protect someone on a contract."
"Those are two very different things. As a gift, I would suggest these earrings." She gestures to a pair of simple pearl earrings "Their enchantment is simple, but it protects against illness. It's not foolproof, but it's useful. 25 gold."
Hal nods "And for a contract?"
"I don't sell a lot of weapons, but I might have something. Give me a minute." She turns, walking back to the wagon as she searches for something. She returns shortly after, a steel amulet in her hand. "Try this, ranger."
He takes the amulet, observing the engraved design on it. He smiles, observing a bow and arrow symbol, the sigil of the Rangers. "Where did you get this?"
"An old friend gave it to me. On the promise I would only sell it to a Ranger."
"What does it do?"
She smiles "It protects. And very well, at that. My friend died of old age, not from a battle."
"Aside from the obvious," He taps the sigil marking on his cuirass, "How do you know I'm a ranger? I could've looted this from a corpse."
"That would be telling, my dear. Perhaps if we see each other again, I will tell you. Now, are you buying?"
What does Hal buy?
