To the BBQ

Diane had raised no objections to Josh's sudden change of mind, as she too was clearly intrigued by what Josh had told her about the community's "unconventional relationships." While Melanie happily led the way, neither Josh or Diane could bring themselves to really ask what exactly Melanie had meant. Before either could get up the gumption to say anything, they found themselves there. Josh was pleasantly surprised that there didn't seem to be too many people, but around six or so so far. Least it wouldn't be stifling.

"You see Mom or Dad?" Diane asked.

Josh shook his head. "Nope. Maybe they're inside."

"We can ask the hosts. This way," Melanie offered.

She led the siblings over to the grill, where an athletic-looking guy with short dirty blonde hair was manning the machine.

"Hey, Melanie!" He said with a jovial greeting.

"Hey, Senor Stevens! I have a couple of friends from next door. Their parents are supposed to be here too," Melanie explained.

"Alex and Claire Winters," Josh says, giving his parents' names.

"Oh yeah! They're in the house. I think your dad had to use the bathroom," Mr. Stevens explained.

"Oh God, I hope they're not having a quickie again," Diane groaned in annoyance.

"Please don't remind me about that," Josh begged in a dry monotone.

"Que?" Melanie asked, turning back to the two with interest.

"Uh uh, not telling that one," Josh said adamantly.

Mr. Stevens laughed. "Well you're welcome to stay out here, or Melanie could show you inside if you want."
