Chapter 40 by dearnise dearnise

What's next?

To Rescue a Gaelic Lass

It is now morning in Itheria, and it doesn't come as a surprise that the first person you see after a good bath, is Akina. The bridal candidate that shared the bed with you--Cielina or Devona--is already getting her day started. So while you were bedding with either woman, your spies were busy working to pinpoint where Fiona is being held captive, how many bandits are present, and how well armed and armored they appear to be. You find the cat-like beastfolk in the study that Duchess Irene uses, going over the reports from the other spies, and looking at a detailed map of The Goldfields. The tight, smooth, supple mix of leather and wool still covers Akina's lithe, petite body, as she greets you with a purr.

"Good morning, m'lord." Akina tells you, smiling.

"Morning, Akina." You reply. "Seems like you and the other spies were working through the night."

"Cat-folk like myself work best at night." Akina tells you. "Our abilities to see at night are matched only by the Elves. At any rate, we have managed to find where they are keeping Fiona captive."

"Where is she?" You ask her.

"She is not in these Goldfields, m'lord." Akina replies. "The abductors have taken her to the rocky coastline in Northwestern Vismark. They're using an abandoned fort on the coastline as a hideout. Our belief is that they'll use it to collect a ransom from the Gaelic tribes."

"What defensive positions did you find?" You ask her.

"The only land route to it has 3 different barricades on an uphill climb." Akina replies. "I found them assembling ballistae at the top, and pouring flammble oils at the end of the land route. They've also posted archers on the sea route to it, so they'll be alerted to any approach by our ships sailing through the crags."

"So they have prepared their defenses well." You tell her. "Were you able to determine how many enemies we're facing?"

"At least 100." Akina replies. "Aside from the usual highwaymen, they appear to have hired mercenaries in the form of archers, heavily armored swordsmen, and a few mages."

"What about where they're holding Fiona?" You ask her.

"Down in the lowest floor of the dungeon." She replies. "The armies are awaiting your orders, m'lord."

"What about our coastal navy?" You ask Akina.

"They should have docked at the nearby port by now." Akina tells you. "What are your orders, m'lord?"

"Given how much they have prepared for our arrival," you tell her, "I believe our best bet is a two-side attack. The armies keep them occupied at the overland entryway, while we transport our best soldiers on board the ships, and insert them at the other entrance."

"What about our Elven colleagues?" Akina asks you.

Do you have the Elves' help?
