Chapter 52
by Almax
Phew.....
Time for your evaluation....
"Alright, you can have a seat on the grass if you'd like." Professor Phoebe says now that you're all in the one spot, still wearing her face-cage helmet but with the face-cage raised up. "My notes are pretty extensive, so this might be a little bit."
You flop down onto the ground as she starts to read out from the top of her list, but after a few seconds of being down there while everybody else is standing, you get back up to your feet again. You daren't look at Delilah right now, she's probably making a face.
"I know that might've felt a bit like being thrown into the deep end, since you haven't had much time to get acquainted with your gear yet, but trust me when I say that this is the best way to do it. Not only are you getting the best sort of experience, but now I know exactly what areas we'll need to focus on in future. So, starting with Cameron...."
Professor Phoebe goes through the list, reading out the things that she noticed during the fight. For most of them, it's one of something that a future combat class will focus, something that you and your classmates need to work on in your free time between classes, or something you did really well. And she really wasn't kidding before! Her notes are super detailed and extensive -- you're surprised she was able to spot so much, let alone write it all down before the fight was over.
"Debbie, it's your turn." She says, looking down to at the notepad in her palm after going through Cameron and Jace.
You straighten up quickly with your arms flat at your side like a soldier, because this is serious business time now. As Professor Phoebe reads out what she's got written about you, Delilah checks, fiddles with, and stows some boxy packs of explosives into little tucked bundle pouches on her leather armour. She seems pretty antsy to get to her turn. But it's yours for right now!
"So, first things first, {if CombatRapidFireAdvice == True}I think I'm going to need to teach you to fan the hammer of your pistol. The way you were trying to rapid fire meant that your shots went all over the place. I also{else}I{endif} think {if CombatWouldBeDead == True}it's worth mentioning that if those monsters were real and their blades were sharp, you'd be dead right now. That's nothing to worry about, this was your first go, but hopefully that can act as a bit of a motivator going forward."
Delilah sneers down at her explosive packs to the side, and Professor Phoebe gives her a look.
"I'll be getting to you next, Delilah." She says simply. Delilah doesn't look up, but she also doesn't sneer again. You stick out your tongue quickly while Professor Phoebe's still looking away. Turning back to you, she continues. "Beyond that, {endif}{if CombatShotDelilah == True}you need to check your fire. Until you get more confident with your aim, taking shots at a monster so near to a teammate like that isn't a clever move. Just because your impact bullets won't hurt her doesn't mean it's fine to go for it -- we aren't trying to game the training system, we're trying to get prepared for the real deal. Okay?"
You nod, feeling a bit bad.
"In general {endif}{if CombatLongRange == True}you need to be careful not to try to use your pistol beyond its effective range. It's not a rifle or a crossbow -- medium to short range only, alright?{if CombatShotDelilah == False}"
You give her a little nod.
"Good.{endif} Other than that, {endif}{if CombatFightReload == True}you've got to make sure you pick your times a bit better when it comes to reloading. Trying it in the middle of a CQC environment isn't the greatest call if you want to make it out with everything in tact. But that should be mostly all {else}it's mostly just little tweaks {endif}that we need to patch up combat-sense wise and skill-training wise. You didn't do a half bad job, especially since it was your first ever go around.{if Weapon == 3} And we'll of course be working to improve your pistol aim even more in future classes regardless.{else} Of course, we'll be working on your striking accuracy and power, as well as your deflection techniques, but you're in a fine enough spot in that regard for just starting out.{endif}"
You give her a bright smile.
"On the side of work to do outside of Combat class, with the way you were going about fighting, {if CombatStrengthGood>1}your time in the Gym has clearly been well spent. Your fighting style and decision-making matched very well with your level of strength{if CombatStrengthNeedsWork = 0}. Keep that great work up.{elseif CombatStrengthNeedsWork = 1}, at least most of the time. A tiny bit more time in the Gym might be needed, but you're absolutely on the complete right track.{else}, at least some of the time. Still, you're strong enough to see how much it can help, so it hopefully won't be too hard finding motivation to put a bit more work in there.{endif}{elseif CombatStrengthNeedsWork>0}you were relying on physical strength a few times and you weren't quite able to succeed. {if Armour == 2}I'd{else}I know that things can be harder when you're wearing that heavy armour, but it's something you'll deal with for your whole time here, so I'd{endif} recommend either changing the way you fight so that you don't rely on it so much or working in the Gym a bit more to get it up to the level you need it at. Neither choice is wrong, but you should probably pick one of them if you're wanting to improve.{else}strength wasn't much of a factor. That's by no means a problem -- {if Strength>6}but with how hard you've been working to get yourself strong, I thought you should know that your combat decision-making wasn't letting you use that benefit of yours very much.{else}I actually think it's great that you know your weaknesses and can fight in a way where you never need to test them. If that's the way you want to continue, you'll have no complaints from me. Just remember that if you ever do decide that physical strength is something you'd like to start working into your style, then a bit of time on it in the Gym wouldn't be misplaced.{endif}{endif}"
That makes sense!
"{if CombatSpeedGood >1}You seem to be in pretty good shape fitness-wise, though -- and fast. {if CombatSpeedNeedsWork <1}That came in handy a few times for you this fight, good on you for working it into your style.{else}It might have let you down here and there, but now you know exactly how it can help you out, so you can decide for yourself if it's worth working on in the Gym more or not.{endif}{elseif CombatSpeedNeedsWork >0}A few times in the fight you were relying on a level of fitness and speed that you just don't have right now. You need to decide what's got to change -- your reliance on it, or your ability with it. If you want to improve then you'll need to either change your style to not need it or you'll need to get some more hours in at the Gym to make it more reliable.{else}Your speed and fitness wasn't something that was put to the test much during that fight. That isn't a problem, it's just a matter of your fighting style and combat decision-making, {if Speed>6}but with how much you look like you're working to get fit and fast I thought you should know that it isn't being applied that much.{else}and if your fighting style and combat decision-making are leading you to not rely on an area you're weak on, then they're doing their job marvellously. So that's a good mark on you, so long as you know that if you ever plan to change things up and work them in a bit more, you'll need to work on it in the Gym first.{endif}{endif} Okay Delilah, you're up...."
Okay, cool. Despite everything, you're actually feeling pretty good about all of this, and you're super ready to do a million times better next time! You plop back into the grass again, beside your two male classmates, and relax out from your soldierly posture to enjoy the peace. Geez, that can really make your back so stiff....
Breaks are nice, you think everyone would agree.
