They let Jill win first

After the rules were explained, the game began. Jill had the fewest coins, 4, Jim and Rick had 10 each. So the boys decided, silently, that Jill would win a game so she had 5 coins.

Jill drew a 7, Jim a 2 and Rick a 4. Jill was the winner. Jill lost the second, third, fourth and fifth rounds. Now she only had 1 coin left.

In the sixth lap, the improbable happened. All drew a 6. "Draw," Rick said, "Now it's time to bet one more time to determine the winner. So double the money." "Oops," Jill said, "I've run out of coins. Now what? Is it done now?" "No, you can use something else of yourself, can't you?" said Jim. "Like?"

"So something from your backpack or something?" Jim tried cautiously. "There's only bread and a bottle of water in it. Then I take that out and put in my backpack." The boys looked at each other and felt that their plan was going to work.
