Chapter 16 by Relator10 Relator10

What's next?

They came from above

As you move outside you see a strange contraption in the sky heading for the homestead.
You swear it looks like a mechanical dragonfly with its tapered body and bulging eyes on the front. It looks like it slightly dips in the air as it approaches the grass field in front of the homestead and then levels out to make a horizontal descent.

“What now!?” you think. “Well, at least today won’t turn out to be a boring day,” you chuckle.

While it continues to make its descent you have the opportunity to take a better look. It basically consists of two similar structures. The small waist between the two parts of the flyer however reminds you more of a wasp than a dragonfly.

As it touches down you see that the contraption is held together by a sort of backbone at the top of it. Below it are two egg-like shapes the front one is translucent for the most part and seems to contain the steering equipment and seating for the occupants and the back one is opaque and is probably cargo space. Between them is a connector piece that is attached to the backbone giving it a wasp waist image. The topside of the backbone is covered with lightcells while along the left and the right side enclosed VTOL rotors are mounted. You count a total of eight of these rotors. With a little imagination (or a whole lot) they can pass for dragonfly wings. And the landing struts can pass for legs.

In the meantime, Sophie and Eilidh have come out to see what is going on outside, because although the rotors are not that noisy they aren’t completely silent either.

So you all watch as the front egg starts to crack and a part of the shell opens and two smaller people that you know as halflings step out. They are both females, the first has practical attire while the second is dressed more casually.

“Hi,” they say as they cross the grass field to your positions in front of the porch. “We were told in Vale that you might have guest rooms available.”

“Yes … I … do …”

“We are two tinkers who are looking for accommodation for the time being. We are done with the wheeling and dealing of the megacity. So we decided to go for the polar opposite of the Megacities Plains and head for the mountains. Most of the homesteads we passed were farmsteads that didn’t have the accommodations we were looking for until we spotted a settlement that turned out to be Vale. There they told us about a homestead that even had a separate building with several guest rooms. Just look for a big forest domain up the mountain they told us. Well… actually it was a lady who did all the talking because she is kind of the local tourist office. And so here we are.”

You don’t know what to think of their story. At first glance, they look like two Megacity Halflings who wanted some adventure in their life. But if they have certified credsticks…the rooms are empty anyhow. So let’s take this one step at a time and see what happens.

“Ok,” you say. “Let's see if got this right… you want a place to stay until you have figured out what you are gonna do.”

Nod.

“I assume that other egg or whatever you call it is cargo space. So you're gonna need space to put the content somewhere.”

Nod. Nod.

Growing up in a guesthouse left you with a rudimentary knowledge of a lot of things. Mostly from asking the guests about it. You guess they found it adorable, a little kid showing interest in so many things because they always took the time to explain it to you in terms you could understand.

“Well … you can use the old barn to set up shop, I ain’t using it anyway.”

Nod. Nod. Nod.

“Ok. Now that is settled I’m Theo Miller

“Mariam Todd but just call me Mitzy as everyone else does.“

“Kaylee Bell but Kalyh will do.” They both replied.

“Ok, then there's just one more thing,” you say. “The common practice around here is barter but I also accept certified credsticks.”

After that you motion to Eilidh who is still at the entrance of the guest room and ask, “Do you mind helping them settle?”

Eilidh POV

“Hi I’m Eilidh,“ you say as you join the two halflings.

As you start walking back to the guest rooms you say “you can have any room you want except the ones that are already taken by Sophie, the other girl, and me, obviously. It's quite easy the unused rooms have a little plaque with the text "FREE"."
