What's next?
Thetis fight
We reached a cavern that Thetis has been using as her lair.
“Thetis!” Undine bunched her hands into fists, “Turn my father and everyone back to normal or else!”
“Or else what?” Thetis asked as the trident in her hand glowed threateningly. She slid her gaze onto the rest of us as we approached and gave a mocking laugh, “Bastard deserves it for protecting fucking mermaids. Kill all mermaids!”
“We’re here to stop you, Thetis,” I raised my Chainsaword to emphasise my point, and saw how Thetis fixated on it with distaste.
"You're just racist against krakens!" Thetis said.
"What?! When you want to exterminate the mermaids?!" I asked.
"Some races really are evil and should be wiped out. Who do you think control the banks or stabbed us krakens in the back in World War I? Mermaids!" Thetis said.
"I thought this universe was before World War I," I said.
"The point is that us krakens are the victims and mermaids are all evil," Thetis said.
"You don't happen to have a granddaughter named Ruby, do you?" I asked.
"Who?" Tank asked.
"It's a film about how you shouldn't be racist to this group... you should be racist to that other one instead," I said.
One of the kraken girls laughed, "Well, actually, my name isn't Ruby but it is pretty close."
"Sounds like a lousy moral," Tank said.
"How dare you! Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken is the greatest movie ever made!" Thetis said.
I rolled my eyes, "Oh course, a kraken queen carrying out a genocidal campaign against mermaids would say that."
"Oh shut up. You're just simping for the mermaids," Thetis said.
Two Kraken girls cackled.
They wrapped their tentacles around Undine's body. Though she struggled to break free, they refused to relinquish their grip. If anything, the krakens held tighter and tighter.
“I’d like to see you try,” Thetis sneered.
She raised up her trident and a grow came out of it. Next thing I knew Thetis had become a great deal younger.
Before she looked like the grandma of those kraken girls. Now she looked their older sister.
"There, I'm young and beautiful, so simp for me," she said.
"Are you insane?" I asked.
She slashed at me with one of her tentacles, cutting my arm. She used another tentacle to slam me into a pillar and brought the trident just touching my throat. I wriggled, trying to escaper her grasp. I felt the tentacles around me tighten.
She quickly slashed the trident down my chest, opening a gash from my sternum to the bottom of my rips. I screamed in pain as blood leaked forth from the wound.
"There, that wasn't so bad, my little poopsie!" Thetis brought the trident back up to my throat.
Glaze shot an ice spell at Thetis, forcing her to let go of me to dodge.
I called a healing spell. The open wound my chest sealed itself into a scar. I breathed easily for a moment.
Looking up, I caught sight of Glaze, still fighting off the two kraken girls. I swam over to the two kraken girls and sliced off the tentacles holding Undine.
Thetis raised the glowing trident in response. The trident began to give off an unsettling humming noise as it charged with power, “Now watch the queen conquer, I’m going to wipe out anything that’s in my—AUGH!”
Undine had yanked on Thetis’ hair with astonishing strength, causing her head to be pulled back as her eyes wrenched shut in pain, which in turn caused her aim with the trident to skew. The bolt of energy that shot out of the trident soared far above our’s heads as we flinched, and at the sound of sizzling I realised it had hit the two kraken girls instead, sending them flying into a wall.
“I…wha…my darlings…” Her mouth hung open for a moment, and then her face twitched once, twice, as her expression turned mean and her eyes turned into something bestial, “You’ll pay for this,” Thetis started in a low voice as the trident glowed again and she smacked Undine away. Dark clouds began to obscure our vision, and they clustered together as the smoke surrounded everything, “You’ll pay for this!”
I kept a tight grip on the Chainsaword as I was blinded from the smoke and held the weapon out in front of me, ready for whatever might come from the fog. I could hear Thetis' voice grow monstrous as it boomed over the clearing.
Within seconds Thetis began to grow larger and larger. The whole cavern collapsed under his new size. It didn't take long before she towered above us, "This sea is about to become your grave!"
Thetis swung her free arm out widely, and it caused a current that threatened to sweep the group up along with it.
“The sea and all its spoils bow to my power now,” Thetis gripped onto the trident as it continued to glow, “And you will bow right alongside them!”
I slashed her cheek.
Tank stabbed her in the eye.
That trident… I thought about it as I continued to dodge. If we were able to get it out of her hands, maybe this could be fixed. But how?
I struggled to swim against the currents Thetis created, and saw how the others were trying to do the same with varying degrees of success: Undine was doing notably better than us at not getting tossed around. Glaze was firing off spells of all kinds as fast as she could, and Tank repeatedly slashed at Thetis' tentacles. But we couldn’t keep it up forever, and Thetis didn’t seem to be harmed very much by their work so far. There had to be another solution.
I swam upwards to try and get mostly out of reach of Thetis' legs.
“This won’t be pretty,” Thetis crowed as she began waving the trident around. I could feel the water give a great pulse as the rubble flew in all directions, and the force of it threw me around as well. Judging by the angry yell Glaze made, some of it likely hit my friends.
I slowly opened my eyes. Where I had landed was a small distance away from the fight, and Thetis' looming visage was a little less overwhelming because of it. I could see great bursts of light shoot out, likely from Glaze’s spells.
I continued searching. There had to be something useful around here, something big enough to hurt when it hit…
Wait, I was going about this all wrong! What I needed was to make Thetis bigger. I still had some of that Eat Me cake from Alice in Wonderland.
I swam back towards the group as fast as I could, and saw that they had made not much progress yet. Tank was taking a beating. Thetis had a tentacles wrapped round her and kept slamming her into the ground. Glaze was knocked out. Only Undine was still putting up any kind of fight.
“Glaze!” I called out, shaking the red Oni awake, “Glaze, stop being being knocked out. I need your help.”
“What are you thinking?”
“I think we can defeat her for good,” I said, trying to grab everyone else’s attention as Thetis continued to wield the trident.
I told them my plan, past constant interruptions with trying to dodge a stray tentacle or a piece of rubble flying at us, “So I need you guys to distract Thetis, so she doesn’t try using that trident if she catches onto us.”
Undine nodded and swam towards the handle of the trident. And with that, I sped away towards Thetis' head.
“Don’t think I’ve forgotten you, dearie!” Thetis shouted as she pulled the trident out of Undine’s reach.
It took some doing, but I had made it there. And with no further ado I threw the Eat Me cake inside her mouth.
Thetis began to grow even more gigantic.
“I think it’s working!” I excitedly told Glaze.
She huffed, "Are you insane! Why would you make her even bigger?!"
Thetis began struggling to breathe.
"You're too big now!" I said.
"Why didn't you just use the Drink Me potion to restore her to her normal size?" Tank asked.
"Because she's still have the trident and probably just make herself giant again. With her body being this big, she can't breathe at all and I doubt someone from a universe based on greek mythology would understand the science behind why," I said.
Thetis ended up, dropping her trident, causing her to be restored to normal size and become an old hag again.
Glaze, Tank and Undine looked as exhausted as I felt.
Me and Glaze healed the group.
“Let’s go back home,” Undine said, “I have an apology I need to make.”
