Chapter 52 by greatestsnake

The women were still sleeping upstairs.

Jake was fairly certain that the girls were still sleeping upstairs. A glance at his phone told Jake that it was still somewhat early, and he was pretty sure he would have heard them getting their stuff and headed out the door.

He sat up on the couch and looked at the mess around the coffee table. Dirty shot glasses, an empty bottle, and some partially empty bottles were a reminder of the failed attempt to finish a board game. A board game interrupted by the power outage.

Jake decided it would be a good idea to check on his power situation, and made his way to the breaker box in the closet to see if anything needed to be reset. At some point, the circuit responsible for the lights had switched itself off, and he put the switch back into the 'on' position. The lights came back without a complaint. Everything else seemed to be in order.

Perhaps making breakfast would be a good start to the day. Or so he thought. Meal items bounced on his head. He could make waffles, pancakes, eggs, or he could make fresh fruit and English muffins. While Jake always wanted to be the most chivalrous or courteous of a host, he already had a lot to clean up to do later, so fresh fruit and English muffins seemed like the simplest option.

There was plenty of fresh fruit to be had before it turned, and he knew there were left over English muffins in the fridge. Jake sets about slicing and toasting the muffins, and while they were in the toaster oven he started chunking up the fruit. Apples, strawberries, a few bananas and blueberries. He simply washed the blueberries off, they didn't really require cutting.

When the muffins were finished, he put them on a large plate and started spreading butter across them, so the heat could melt the butter and let it soak in. He put everything on the counter, along with a few things on the side like syrup and a jar of jelly. He picked up one of the muffins, put a slather of jelly from the jar over the top, and starting biting into it when he heard the door upstairs open.

Sarah, rubbing at her eyes, came down the stairs. "I thought I smelled something," she mused, looking over the counter. "May I?" She didn't want to just assume that Jake had made enough for everyone. He might, possibly, be intending to eat it all by himself.

"Of course," Jake said. "It's mostly for you girls. I'm not a huge breakfast eater. " Unknown to him, Jake accidentally smeared a bit of jam on the side of his cheek.

[Sarah points to the jam.]

[Sarah uses her hand to wipe the jam.]

[Sarah hands over a napkin.]
