Chapter 71 by keron keron

Who is it?

The witch

You can see that the figure that emerged from behind the trees is Pammy as she approaches the gazebo. She's wearing a dark coat over her dress, and she has an old book in her left hand, similar to the 1 she had used in the library. It must be a spell book.

"That... was interesting..." Pammy says as she steps into the gazebo.

You're embarrassed to have been caught in the act and wary at the same time of Pammy since it looks like she came prepared. You gently touch the stone on the teleportation ring on your hand, ready to get out of here if you sense the slightest hint of danger. "How much did you see?" you ask, trying to act normal and calm.

"All of it. I was behind them and stopped around the trees. I was wondering why they just ignored you, until I realized they couldn't see you. And then, something happened, I'm not sure, you jumped from 1 spot to the other in the blink of an eye, and that guy just suddenly left and you took his place..."

You try not to smile as Pammy describes what she saw. If she noticed that you had jumped from 1 place to another, it must mean that while she is directly unaffected by your invisibility ring or mind control ring, she can't counter the effects of the time control ring, or the teleportation ring if you don't use them on her, you assume.

"...you have 5 rings, so each must give you a different ability... invisibility, mind control... some sort of time or space manipulation... and what else?" Pammy poses the question.

"Well, I can't tell you all my secrets, not before you tell me yours," you answer.

"Why did you do that? Who are you? You're not from the Bureau, are you?" Pammy asks.

The Bureau? Did she mean the FBI? You have many questions yourself, but for now, you have to bluff your way through. "Because I felt like it. I'm John, and yes, I'm with the Bureau, as a consultant," you decide to say, pretty sure that your response is ambiguous enough that it's believable.

Pammy looks unsure as she hugs the book to her chest protectively and starts to pace around the inside of the gazebo, while you lean back against the table. "A consultant? And they sent you to investigate what happened to James Danker?"

"They did."

Pammy completes a round inside the gazebo and returns to stop in front of you, but she doesn't ask another question, so you decide to turn the tables on her.

"So... tell me what happened to Danker," you say.

What's next?
