The situation is discussed

"It's what I do," he said. "A man who doesn't keep a his word isn't much of a man. Now let's get you home. The next guys might be more persistent." He escorted them up the path, casually putting his arms around both of them and resting his hands on their hips. To Sally's surprise, Jenna didn't pull away from him, even turning her head to give him a grateful smile.

At the entrance to staff housing he gave them a brief squeeze, then stepped back.

"Listen to your friend, Red," he told Jenna. "You don't have a lot of choices, so make the most of what you have. I hope to see you again sometime soon." He reached out and touched her cheek for an instant, then turned and walked away. Sally grabbed her friend's arm and tugged her through the door, noticing that Jenna's necklace was still green. Obviously staff housing was not one of the dead zones that Miss Calano had described to her. She hurried Jenna up the stairs and into their room.

"Ok, Jenna you have to listen to me now," Sally said, pulling her friend to a seat beside her on her bed. "It will seem crazy, it did to me at first, but it's true. Just listen and ask questions later, ok?"

The redhead opened her mouth as if to say something, then nodded and closed it.

For the next half hour Sally explained what she had learned and what Miss Calano had told her. Jenna's eyes widened at times, and several times she frowned in anger, but she kept silent and listened. When Sally finally ran down, Jenna stared down at her own hands, her face struggling with it's composure.

"So if we quit we get nothing, just dumped back on the mainland with no ticket home?"

"That's right. It's in our contract. I can't afford that."

"Neither can I. What if we phoned someone? Your parents?"

"Mine don't have a lot of money and they'd freak if they heard about this place. What about yours?"

"Same." Jenna looked glumly at the floor. "It might be better than getting **** everytime this thing goes green. What if we just take it off?" She raised her hands and fumbled at the necklace.

"We can't. There's a special key that unlocks it. I read it in something while Miss Calano was talking to me." Jenna's shoulders slumped in defeat and her eyes filled with tears.

"I'm so sorry I got us into this mess. I'm so sorry, Sally." She buried her face in her hands and started to cry.
