Chapter 8 by android1966 android1966

What's next?

The party fights like a team.

As you regain your feet in the cover of low bushes and ferns, you end your turn by using your ability to hide as a bonus action, melting into the foliage and disappearing from sight until you move or attack again. You take a moment to appraise how your party companions are faring. Rick had tanked the blow from the Ice Giant's club, but at a cost, even with the barbarian ability to reduce incoming damage, that was a big hit that would have flattened any other member of the party. The green skin of the Amazonian Orchish avatar is now streaked with blood, and you doubt that even they can absorb a second hit.

Kim, the Drow cleric, snatches the coiled whip from their belt. The barbed whip whirls around the Drow's head in a circle, but then, instead of attacking the giant, the whip flicks back over their shoulder, and the tip of the whip strikes one of their exposed buttocks with a crack that makes you wince. The Drow cries out from the sting of the whip, although the shriek sounds as if it is as much from ecstasy as it is from the pain. Rick thrusts out their free hand, clutching the holy symbol of Loviatar, towards the bloodied barbarian, and a purplish glow surrounds the magnificently muscled body. The blood, scrapes and gashes from the club's hit disappear, and you see Rick's avatar straighten up as holy, or perhaps that is unholy, divine magic heals them.

Chris now rushes in, the great Zweihänder sword arcing as they also call upon their patron deity to imbue their attack with a divine strike. The sword cuts into one of the giant's calves as if it were the trunk of a tree, leaving a vicious-looking rent in its leg.

Ted does not rush forward to attack, and at first, you think they might have frozen in fear. Then you see the cute and kissable lips of the small oriental bard moving soundlessly. The giant howls with pain, his hands shooting up to clutch his head before he inexplicably turns and attempts to flee the combat. Both Chris and Rick are in melee range and are able to use their reactions as the giant turns tail to get two more solid hits on the monster.

"He'll be back, he only has to flee for one round," Ted shouts out. "But he won't have a surprise attack this time. We can do this."

The paladin and barbarian brace themselves, prepared to meet the giant head-on, relying on their armour or barbarian rage to tank his attacks. Ted and Kim hang back, protected by the frontline fighters and ready to cast supporting magics. You also ready yourself, confident that you can get a bonus to your attack from stealth to multiply the damage you can deal out.

Second round of combat?
