Chapter 4

What Does She Write?

The option to have someone else decide for her.

Just in case this actually worked, Elana wanted to start simple, and because she knew not everyone shared her secret desires, she needed to think of something harmless.

But it needed to be absolute, as well, or it would defeat its own purpose. It was all well and good to want to lose control, but Elana knew that she'd never have the courage to actually go through with things if she had any ability to back out whenever she wanted.

She pressed the pencil to paper and began slowly, reasoning things out as she went.

It should be an old rule. She was going to create an institution or tradition out of thin air, and didn't want to have to deal with the novelty of that. It felt much easier for Elana to surrender to something monolithic, or to slip quietly into an existing framework than to try to be a cultural pioneer. She wanted to be able to count on social pressure and acceptance for what she was thinking, as well.

Elana wanted to be certain that she'd be genuinely stripped of choice. She didn't trust herself to go through with anything on her own willpower, and frankly she didn't want to have to muster up the strength or courage to do anything. She wanted all that taken from her.

She paused, her pencil frozen between words, as she realized she had no one to interact with. She didn't know how to solve that part of the puzzle, and then realized she didn't have to. She didn't have to come up with anything at all!

Giddy with her fantasy, she laughed out loud as she erased portions of her statement and quickly finished writing her rule, ignoring the concerned glances she got from the patrons at a nearby table.

Old Rule: All civilizations recognize that not all people desire to be fully free, and it is considered a basic human right that people be allowed to choose to give up some or all of their rights and privileges, even if only temporarily or experimentally. Communities, churches, societies, institutions, and governments will always contain considerations, laws, rules, or other policies that oversee, administer, and enforce this aspect of civilization.

That ought to do it, she thought, as she set her pencil down. Even if the notebook were a prank or a joke of some kind, the mental exercise had proven enjoyable, and Elana was a little worked up over the fantasy playing out in her head. She couldn't remember that last time she'd been so wet.

Her phone chimed with a notification, pulling her out of her fantasy, and she sighed and grabbed the device to check what it was. But as she unlocked the phone, she noticed an unfamiliar app. A plain white icon with a dark stylized chain stretched across it.

As she looked at the icon, her mind filled with memories and understanding of just how real her little fantasy had become, had always been. It was an old rule, after all.

What does she do, now that she knows it's all real?
