Elana couldn't believe it, and yet of course she believed it. All her life, this had been true. History and government classes she'd taken in school taught about all the various ways that society has grown and evolved around the fundamental truth that some people preferred less freedom than others.

She tapped the new-yet-familiar app and was presented with her own profile, meticulously filled out. She vaguely recalled having done that herself, but focusing on the memory of exactly when proved confusing and she just accepted it.

The app was linked to a government agency that handled delibertization, and she recalled that she'd needed to go into a local branch for lengthy interviews. She even had fill out extensive paperwork to activate her account. This thing was the real deal.

Her profile contained all of her basic information. Name, age, birthdate, height and weight, hair and eye color, body measurements, blood type. There were sections for her education history, career history, relationship history? Elana tapped that and found it to be blank, which was true. She'd never had a proper relationship. That had been part of her problem in the first place.

With the empty relationship history staring her in the face, Elana noticed more subsections. Sexual history, sexual preferences, kinks, limits...

Fully fascinated by this app and fueled by morbid curiosity, Elana didn't hesitate to tap on the kinks tab and she couldn't believe what she saw.

Elana's hands shook as she stared at the small paragraph, her face growing hot. In her heart she knew it was all true, and in the far reaches of her memory she recalled being interviewed by experts who helped draw these truths out of her.

She'd wanted this—sort of—but she felt the urge to flee rising in her stomach. She shook her head several times but **** herself to go further into the app.

Which is where she found the option to change her status. She was currently listed as "inactive" with the option to go active.

There was another box indicating a duration. The default setting was one week, but she could change it to as long as six months—anything more required going back into the office—or as little as 12 hours.

She knew what it would mean to set her profile to active. She'd be opting in to the nationwide delibertization program, and as such would become subject to an entirely new set of laws and social expectations.

Her finger hovered over the button but her nerves flared up again and she was suddenly unsure. One week? She'd be unable to change her mind for the duration once she activated it. That had been made very clear in her numerous interviews and informational literature.
