The old king’s blessings
The courtyard remained frozen. The bride’s quiet sobs were the only sound. Her mother had both hands pressed over her mouth. The groom stood rigid beside his wife, eyes fixed on the ground. Even Caesar’s guards stayed silent, faces carefully blank.
“Answer me,” Caesar said. His voice cut through the stillness. “How did my father bless a new couple?”
The guard nearest him shifted. For a moment it seemed he still would not speak. Then, under the direct weight of the order, the words came out low and flat.
“He raped the bride, Your Majesty. Right there. During the ceremony. In front of everyone—the guests, the parents, the husband. He would have her brought forward and stripped completely. Then he would bend her over the nearest table, or force her to her knees, or simply hold her upright while he raped her in full view of the gathering. Everyone had to watch. Sometimes he made the husband hold her still for it.”
The guard’s jaw tightened.
“After he was done, he would give the husband a single gold coin. That was the man’s blessing. The old king said the coin was for raising whatever child might come from the king’s seed. He called the whole thing the true blessing—his cum in the new wife’s belly, and a coin in the husband’s hand.”
He paused, then continued.
“If anyone protested—husband, father, brother, anyone—they were killed on the spot. Cut down before the ceremony even finished. The widows were taken straight to the palace and added to the harem. If the dead man had adult sons, they were gelded that same day and made guards for the harem. Adult daughters were taken into the harem as well. Younger children were sent to the palace to be trained as maids and servants. No one was left to speak against it afterward. The king made certain of that.”
Silence followed the explanation. Thick. Absolute.
Caesar stared at the guard. The words did not settle. They sat wrong in his mind, heavy and unreal—images of a naked bride bent over a table, being raped while a room full of people watched, as her husband stood helpless beside her, then a gold coin pressed into the man’s palm once it was over. He had known his father was harsh. He had heard about the iron fist, of people who disappeared. He had not known this.
Slowly, he turned his head.
The bride was still crying, tears running freely down her face. The rose he had given her was crushed in her fist. The groom had not moved. His hands hung at his sides, the gold coin Caesar had given him still resting in one open palm. Around them, the parents and guests watched Caesar with the same fixed, terrified stillness, waiting to see what the new king would do now that he understood exactly what kind of blessing they had once been forced to endure.
