Chapter 3
by CrawlingM
What are the first concerning tremors of foreboding?
The internet goes down, are those sirens in the distance?
It's Saturday evening and you were in the middle of a casual gaming session when you get disconnected from the game. Cursing, you alt-tab out to see that you've lost the internet connection. You pull up your phone and try to check out your local ISP's homepage through your mobile phone's internet, but you don't seem to have internet here either. You see you got cell signals, so you assume the phone network is still up and running.
You get up and go to look out the window. You're wondering if this has anything to do with those recent news out of Japan and other countries about the mysterious things happening there. You had done some research and downloaded a zip file from a nutty conspiracy forum a few days back, but a date and other obligations have kept you from investigating it further.
You hold your breath for a moment as you listen more closely, before opening the window, confirming your suspicions. Sirens! Police and fire department sirens for the most part from the sound of it, are faintly whining through the air from the center of the city. You live relatively close, you probably could get there in 40 minutes on foot, but it's usually far enough away that you never really can tell if anything's going on. Not today, however.
You decide to go check one of the local newspapers, "The Droplet," websites. You believe they keep their servers in town, so if the internet is still up locally, it should be up.
"Public art sculpture defaced with grafitti, unexpected riots in the streets" pops up with big letters on the front page, with a generic picture of blue light vehicles and just a part of the sculpture visible in the header picture. Click bait is apparently still the name of the game, you think with annoyance as you click the article and get a better picture of it all.
it's dark, so they've set up some lights to get a clear view for the cleaners to begin washing the sculpture clean. It seems to be some sort of weird Korean or Egyptian glyph. It kind of makes your skin crawl... Or is that the fact that it seems the cleaners dropped their stuff on the ground and have gone away? The only people you can see on the picture is a few firefighters who seem to be shifting uncomfortably.
You shrug and move down to read the text.
"What initially was thought to be a feat of vandalism expediently done under everyone's nose has developed into something more mysterious, as our photographer sent us a few photos of the scene before we lost contact with them. Nearby witnesses have reported law enforcement and fire brigade vehicles standing abandoned as firefighters and police officers abandoned their posts. Our photographer was at the scene on the phone as these things happened, and their last communication received mentioned public indecency in the nearby high class shopping mall."
You furrow your brow as you note some slightly unprofessional paragraph spaces.
"This image is currently the best image of the scene down town that The Droplet have acquired that shows off the vandalism of the public artwork-. and it seems that the internet connection outside of the city has just been lost..."
"The Droplet will be updatyg this article as more news of the developing situation come in."
"."
You think it seems the writer of the article must have pressed the publish button in a hurry. Sort of unprofessional, even for a local newspaper in a city like this.
Still, you scroll back up again and look at the picture for a moment before you stretch in the office chair, feeling a bit antsy.
You hear rummaging in the apartment above you and someone shuffling quickly up the stairs that are located behind the wall of your computer room. Seems the rest of the city is on edge as well. You try some of the other local newspaper sites, but no luck.
Within a few minutes, you believe you can hear moans of a sexual nature from the apartment above. Huh, not every day you hear that from up there. If ever. If it is who you think it is, it should be a middle aged couple who have sent their kids off to college.
Come to think of it, you're feeling sort of turned on yourself. Pretty much the only thing left on your computer now is single player games and downloaded porn, and you may have opened up a few games to make the time pass while you were trying to get connection to the internet.
Do you scratch the itch?
