Chapter 77 by fenharel

What's next?

The fight gets worse.

"2 water barrels wasted, and I can't do any real damage to her since she keeps healing. I can't counter her healing since I can't freeze her." Verdi thought to himself, feeling odd at the intense glare Evangeline was giving him. He dismissed it as an enemy sizing up her opponent and trying to see his next move, focusing on doing the same for himself. The longer he stared at the hulking giant, however, the more worried he became. She didn't have any weaknesses.

She had an inventory full of biomass, the ability to regenerate faster than him, and attack power on par with Varrick's. With a body like hers, it was doubtful poison would have any effect on her while ice magic could only inconvenience her. Even strangulation was out of question, her inhuman body undoubtedly capable of cutting new holes in herself for breathing. As he continued thinking of weak points, Evangeline's new arm grew back, the previous one continuing to flop around as Verdi tried to conceal his terror. Rather than showing pain, fear, or anger at his attack, Evangeline beamed happily at him as she made a fist, testing out her new limb.

"That was a good hit dear! It's been years since someone's taken my hand! Hope you can keep this up!" Evangeline said, treating her dismemberment as something to be lauded as Verdi grabbed his ice pinwheel, stumbling slightly due to his lack of feet. It was odd standing without ankles, but he couldn't heal without biomass. He swallowed as a soft breeze blew past them, the sheer heat Evangeline's body gave off causing him to sweat as he thought over his next move. Slamming his pinwheel into the arena, he reshaped it into a barrel of pure ice. As Evangeline geared up to throw another punch at him, he placed his hand against the ice barrel and cast a basic spell.

Rubble flew into the air as Evangeline's fist missed Verdi, his body a mere blur as he reshaped the ice barrel into a rod and elongated it, shoving him backwards at breakneck speeds as he reshaped his bloodied stump legs into ice skates. Before long, the ice barrel was reduced to a rod mere inches in girth as Verdi traversed the entire arena in mere seconds. Rather than snatch the ice pole, Evangeline made a mad dash to Verdi, walking forward with her hands like an oversized gorilla and rapidly building up speed. Despite Verdi using instinctive magic to push himself backwards, Evangeline was mere yards away from him, catching up in mere seconds with her inhuman strength.

"Gotcha." Verdi thought, retracting the ice pole back to him. His back ached as he held 1.5 times his weight in ice as Evangeline reached him, Verdi's body still sliding backwards on his makeshift ice skates. Rather than panic at the current situation, Verdi grinned with what remained of his face as he used both monster cores and his brain to reshape the ice in his arms. He could sense from Evangeline's shifting weight that it was too late for her, the angel preparing to throw another punch at him.

Slamming the ice barrel in his arms to the ground, Verdi spread the ice out on the arena, transforming it into a massive skating rink. Despite the ice being mere inches in girth, Verdi's magic was able to reinforce it to support Evangeline's body. He made a sharp right as Evangeline slipped, narrowly dodging her as she slipped on the sheet of ice.

"Kya!" A cute voice leaked out as the meat colossus fell to the ground, her current incarnation anything but balanced or dexterous. Mere moments before she landed, Verdi reshaped the ice to a bed of spikes, each one thicker than a finger and packed with his magic power. Evangeline's surprised squeal turned to a long drawn out moan as she was penetrated by dozens of inch thick ice spikes. Despite being impaled, she continued flying forward from sheer inertia, a trail of meat in her wake as she was sliced open. As he watched Evangeline fly to the arena walls, he spotted a tube of flesh connecting one of his spikes to Evangeline's still sliding body.

"Oh! Verdi goes for a counterattack! She's got real guts, but it looks like Evangeline's got those too!" The harpy announcer shouted as Verdi found himself staring at a long, uninterrupted tube of intestines dangling out of Evangeline. Despite the angel tumbling across the arena, her intestines seemed to stretch indefinitely as though she were more intestine than woman. Realizing the golden opportunity before him, Verdi capitalized on the opportunity to inflict more damage to her.

"Her regeneration is automated. She'll heal from ANY injury no matter what." He realized, grabbing the ice spike impaling Evangeline's intestines and casting another ice spell. Instantly, the thin ice spike reshaped into a three pronged trident laden with barbs, ensuring that her intestines couldn't slip off for his next move. Nearby, Evangeline groaned from dizziness, her tumble disorienting her as her wounds knit themselves together.

As got back to her feet, she felt something in her stomach drawing her to Verdi. At first she assumed it to be some sort of breeding instincts, her body longing for her opponent at that moment. It was only when she saw the massive trident in Verdi's hands rotating like a spinning top with her own intestines impaled on it that she realized she actually was being drawn towards him one meter of flesh at a time. At the same time, she could sense her magic and inventory draining with each passing second, her body **** to repair the damage out of habit.

"What the fuc-Looks like Verdi's in the mood for pasta! Apologies for my crass language folks, but he's just forking Evangeline up!" The harpy announcer said, his tone **** as he **** himself to watch the two unkillable monsters duke it out. Sighing, Evangeline grabbed her intestines and tugged, hoping to either tear her intestines or drag Verdi to her. Rather than send the lightweight alchemist to her, she tugged at a handful of severed intestines, a clean cut slicing them off. Glancing down, she clicked her tongue to find a thread of ice concealed within her intestines. Before she could stuff her guts back into her body, the ice coiled to her still exposed organs and latched onto them, allowing Verdi to continue reeling her organs in.

"Wow. I've been gutted before, but never like this." Evangeline said, continuing to try ripping herself free of Verdi's relentless attack. Eventually, she grinned like a cheshire cat as she rammed her fist into her abdomen, feeling around and gripping her organs as though she were searching for change in a coin pouch.

"And Evangeline cuts her losses! I guess Verdi's the one with the guts now!" The harpy announcer said as Evangeline tore her stomach out, the panther sized organ throbbing and pulsing as Verdi reeled it in. The organ flew through the air like a fish on a line as it made a beeline for Verdi, the organ rapidly swelling as gases built up within it. Before he could form a barrier, the stomach detonated with the **** of a hand grenade. Unlike conventional explosives whose payload was reliant on shrapnel, Evangeline's payload was naught but concentrated acid.

"Oh! Look at that folks! Verdi's... Verdi's... Getting eaten ali-"

"GYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! AAAAAAAAAAH!" Verdi's screams filled the arena, interrupting the harpy announcer's play by play as he was splashed by the corrosive solution. A standard acid would have merely corroded his body to basic slurry. Though painful, he could at least heal from the injuries since the biomass was still there. She had doused him in magically enhanced piranha solution, the sheer destructive power of the solution corroding her own stomach. It was the most horrific of acids, breaking his body down not into genetic slurry, but into carbon dioxide as it ate through his skin and melted him to the bone. The only thing accompanying Verdi's screams was the sizzling of the arena and Evangeline's groans as the giant rubbed at her grotesque body. Panicking, Verdi made a beeline for a nearby water barrel, cutting it open and leaping inside to halt the burning. The barrel topped over as he panicked, the burning continuing as he formed ice in the hopes of halting the pain, burning up far too much magic into the process of freezing the water. The audience could only look on in horror at his current appearance as his screaming subsided.

His right eye socket was missing as was his jaw and mouth, Evangeline's cells assimilating it earlier. His left eye had nothing but exposed nerves, half melted from the acid while his arms, legs, and torso were missing their skin or had exposed bone sealed over by ice. Both his feet were gone, scraped to the ankle and replaced with ice skates made of blood. Several of his ribs were missing, outright eaten by the acid. As he tried to gain his bearings once more, he sensed Evangeline pointing the finger she had severed at the start of the match at him.

"Inventory." Before he could respond, the finger elongated as it eagerly drank up the nutrients Evangeline spawned. Still dazed from the acid, Verdi was sent flying backwards as the finger punched straight through his ribs and into his right lung. "Inventory." Evangeline's inventory activated once more as Verdi's lungs were filled with nutrient broth. Before she could suffocate him, Verdi froze his right lung, abandoning it as her finger expanded within him from the surplus of nutrients. At the same time, he could sense her cells overtaking him, treating him as mere fodder as she overwhelmed his regeneration.

"Stop the fight! Stop the fight! Stop the fight! Tell him to stop the fight before he kills himself against that freak!" Citrinas shouted from the stands, shaking Fenri as the hero clenched her fist, her previous zeal and energy diminished as she saw the true horror of Evangeline's strength. Eventually, she cupped her hands and shouted to Verdi, her voice reaching Verdi even from a distance.

"Verdi! Verdi you've done enough! You can quit now!" She said, finally accepting that Verdi was severely outclassed against the Collector. Relieved that he had done his best, Verdi prepared to raise his hand in surrender, only to detect something. Now that he was blinded, he could perceive his environment better. There was something odd about the ice he used to numb his acid burns. It was too big. He knew how much water he had. This was too much ice. As he took in the strange ice, he finally saw the path to victory unfold before him. He quickly began calculating with his main body, the 6 cores working in tandem as he braced himself. He just needed to hold out for a minute.

"Really takes your breath away, huh folks!? She put up one hell of a fight, but it looks like Verdi's finally down for the count!" The harpy announcer shouted as Verdi bit his hand and reshaped his blood into a serrated knife. His chest writhed as Evangeline's cells overtook him, her face forming on the right side of his chest as an eye formed on it.

"Liver and right lung are shot. Gotta take it out before it spreads." Verdi thought as he stabbed the knife into his chest, using his own blood to amputate Evangeline's cells from his body.

"Oh fucking-Verdi, Verdi's cutting her losses! Can you believe this folks!?" The harpy announcer shouted as the right half of Verdi's torso was split open as though some alien had burst forth from his chest, an apt description as the crowd saw what lay within his body. Panicking, he reached into his gaping chest cavity and grabbed the thing pulsing within him, frozen meat crunching as he threw the accursed thing out of his body. The beast landed with a sickening splat, staring back at him as it slowly crawled towards him in the hopes of returning to where it was once nestled.

The organ was no longer consisting of his own cells, now a mere construct of Evangeline's twisted magic. The mass was clad in deep blue eyes that mimicked Evangeline's and laden with twitching fingers and toes that mindlessly flailed about. The upper portion of his torso had Evangeline's face growing on it, the double staring at him with one overgrown, malformed eye. Despite lacking neuronal tissue, the creature scuttled about on its uneven digits before Evangeline scooped the thing up and petted it like a dog.

"Aw look, it has my eyes. Isn't it beautiful?" She said lovingly as the few audience members left either vacated the premise or their stomachs. They had come for a battle, for blood, for ****, and for glory. The only thing in the arena at this moment was depravity, corruption, and sadism of the greatest level.

"Oh *glurk* I think... I think I'm gonna be sick. Fuck this job." The harpy announcer said, abandoning any semblance of professionalism at the sight of Evangeline's powers. "F-f-f-folks, I guess I spoke too soon! Verdi has-urk- once again survived!" The harpy announcer shouted as Evangeline was yet again denied the killing blow. Despite that, she seemed almost happy to see Verdi had escaped **** and assimilation, setting her new pet aside as she took a step forward, her body causing the world to quake in terror. Meanwhile, the world spun for Verdi as he tried to catch his breath, the existence of a single lung leaving him on the cusp of unconsciousness. Most of his body was either frozen, torn off, or devoured by Evangeline. He had only half his magic left. His water was dispersed throughout the arena, and his opponent wasn't harmed in the slightest by any of his attacks, merely taking them with zeal and gusto. Standing tall, she stared closely at Verdi as if waiting for something.

"Um... Sweetie, are you going to surrender? I'll completely understand if you do." She said, her voice still retaining the polite demeanor it always had. In the distance Verdi could hear everyone, his party, the crowd, even the announcer demanding he surrender. As he gasped for air, he couldn't help but feel a wave of nostalgia. He couldn't explain it, he didn't comprehend why, but he just felt nostalgic as everyone in the world cried for him to stop doing what he was doing. He felt another wave of nostalgia as he ignored their pleas. He almost wanted to laugh as he found another shard of his past. It seemed in his past life, he was a stubborn bastard that didn't care what anyone else said.

"Uh-uh." He said, shaking his head as he finished calculating his next spell, his answer earning him Evangeline's finest smile as she pounced towards him to continue the battle.

Does he finish the battle?
