The fallout

An earshattering alarm shook the house as Ada woke up in the dead of night as she sat up. She was still naked having just enjoyed a night in with Eve and celebrating New Year’s Eve. She checked the clock to see it was 3:33AM as well as numerous reports of disasters across the country and her lovely wife, Eve was sleeping though all of this noise. “Honey!” She said shaking her spouse awake. “We need to go now!!!” Eve groggily woke up until she finally heard the alarm and immediately covered her ears.

“What the hell is going on, babe!?” She yelled as Ada grabbed Eve as they ran out of the bedroom and hurried to the basement. Eve was as naked as her spouse as they hurried down into the bunker that Ada had been preparing for the past few years as she knew a nuclear war was possible any day due to the political climate. It was the reason she moved Eve into the middle of nowhere in Kentucky. Eve thought Ada was crazy for installing a shelter as well but never stopped her since it helped her sleep at night. Eve’s bare feet touched the cement steps and couldn’t be more grateful for Ada’s preparedness as each step down felt that they were getting further from the disaster on the surface.

The sound of the steel doors being locked tight and the occasional shaking of the ground were the only sounds Eve could hear. The dimly lit lights finally led down to a straight walkway that opened up to a room. Eve saw the mountains of canned goods, a working shower/ toilet, fresh water barrels and a generator. Ada was quickly locking the door shut as the two naked women embraced tightly for a few minutes. “Thank god you didn’t listen to me, my darling.”

Ada kissed her wife’s forehead and said, “I have wanted to be wrong the whole time. I never wanted to use this.” They planted a kiss as they held their foreheads together and sobbed quietly. Everyone they knew was most likely dead as the constant shaking of the ground indicated something horrible was going on. Ada led Eve to a makeshift cot that was attached to the wall and wrapped her in a blanket. “Let me get some lights on and I’ll get you some water.” Eve watched as her naked wife pulled the generator to life and the overhead lights popped a few times before illuminating the room. Ada returned with a cup of water that she handed to Eve.

Eve opened the blanket as the two naked women huddled close and did their best to ignore the distant rumbling. Eve chuckled as she looked around and asked, “Babe…did you remember to store any clothes down here?”

Ada looked around and saw that she had indeed forgotten one of the most important things when stockpiling everything in the shelter. “I guess I assumed we would have time to pack a bag of clothes and that we wouldn’t be naked running to the shelter.”

Eve leaned her head into Ada with a giggle and said, “Clothes are the least of our worries. Let’s just worry about getting to tomorrow.” They snuggled close and the distant rumblings became a white noise as the two women found themselves drifting into sleep once more.
