The debt of the realm
The silt settled on the floor of the Throne Room. The water was clear again, but the atmosphere had shifted irrevocably. The hierarchy of the ocean had been rewritten in the span of a single battle.
King Triton swam forward. He looked aged, his golden crown slightly askew, his chest heaving from the exertion of holding the line. He stopped a few feet from me, looking up at my towering, shark-hybrid form.
He looked at the Keyblade in my hand, then at the way Ariel was pressed against my side, her arm possessively wrapped around my waist.
"You possess a terrible power, stranger," Triton boomed, his voice regaining some of its royal weight, though his eyes betrayed his relief. "I have not seen fighting like that since the wars of the ancient seas."
"War requires terrible things, King Triton," I replied, my voice deep and smooth. "Peace is bought with teeth."
Triton sighed, lowering his trident. "You saved my Kingdom. You saved my daughters. For that, the Sea owes you a debt."
"I don't collect debts in gold, King," I said, my black eyes drifting past him to the huddle of mermaids near the floor. "I collect loyalty."
The six sisters - Attina, Alana, Adella, Aquata, Arista, and Andrina - swam upward cautiously. They were a rainbow of tails and seashells, each one beautiful in a distinct way, but all of them sharing the same royal features as Ariel.
They circled us, keeping a respectful distance, their eyes wide with a mix of terror and intense curiosity. They had spent their lives protected in the palace, warned about sharks, warned about the surface. And here was a creature that embodied both, holding their sister.
"Is he... safe?" Attina, the eldest with the orange tail, asked, her voice trembling slightly.
"He is dangerous," Ariel answered for me, her voice ringing with pride. She swam a little closer to me, running her hand down my grey, muscular arm. "But he is on our side."
She turned slightly, deliberately exposing her shoulder. The sisters gasped. The bite mark, the dark violet bruise of my jaw, was clearly visible against her pale skin.
"He marked you," Adella whispered, swimming closer, her eyes fixated on the bruise. "Like the legends? The Mating Bite?"
"He claimed me," Ariel corrected, looking at me with adoring, heavy-lidded eyes. "And in exchange, he destroyed the darkness."
I watched the sisters. I could smell their pheromones shifting in the water. Fear was fading, replaced by the same magnetic pull that had drawn Ariel in. They were attracted to power. They were attracted to the Savior.
I swam toward them. They flinched but didn't flee.
I stopped in front of Alana. She froze, staring at my chest. I reached out and tucked a strand of her dark hair behind her ear. My claw was sharp enough to slice her throat, but I was gentle.
"You were trapped in the bubbles," I murmured. "It must have been cold."
"It... it was terrifying," Alana breathed, leaning almost imperceptibly into my touch.
I looked at Andrina and Arista. They were holding hands, watching me with wide eyes.
"The predator protects the pack," I told them, my voice vibrating in the water around them. "And you are part of Ariel's pack. That makes you mine to protect."
I turned back to Triton. The King was watching the interaction closely. He was old, and he was wise. He saw the way his daughters were looking at me. He saw the bite on Ariel’s shoulder. He knew what kind of "debt" I was collecting.
And he knew he couldn't stop it. I was the only thing standing between his kingdom and the abyss.
"You have the freedom of the Palace," Triton said, his voice solemn. "My daughters... they need to recover from their ordeal. Perhaps you can... ensure they are safe?"
It was a surrender. A handing over of the guard.
"I will watch over them personally," I promised.
I turned to the sisters.
"Come," I commanded softly. "The Throne Room is a place for politics. We need somewhere quieter. Somewhere we can celebrate the victory properly."
Ariel took my hand. "My room is too small for all of us," she said, looking at her sisters with a mischievous, conspiring smile. "But the Royal Guest Grotto... it has the softest sponges. And it's very private."
The sisters looked at each other. A silent communication passed between them, a mix of nervousness and excitement. Then, as one, they nodded.
"Lead the way, Master," Aquata said softly.
I smirked, my serrated teeth glinting in the palace light.
"After you, ladies."
We swam out of the throne room, leaving the old King alone with his trident. I was followed by a trail of seven mermaids, a rainbow of royalty, heading toward the deep, private chambers of the palace.
The hunt was over. The feast was about to begin.
