The captain gets back to work

A little more than a week after Captain Jeffries had been freed, she returned to work following a mandatory period of leave. Medina had been filling in for her, and well, I had been filling in Medina, Radicek and most of the other female police officers at the station and generally helping out in difficult cases where I could. They had put me on the system as a special consultant so I was semi-officially there.

Once she was settled the Captain called the three of us in. Medina, still in her obligatory schoolgirl outfit closed the door behind us and the Jeffries sat down behind her desk, looking serious.

“You three, that’s the problem. Since you cracked the Grimes case, and saved my ass, you’ve gotten attention higher up the chain”, she said sounding annoyed. “They want you to go to DC and run an abduction and kidnap team”.

“Huh”?

“Yeah. I’m just back to work and I’ve to lose my best 3 cops straight away”, she complained. “Bastards!” she added. I was pleased that I was getting added into the cops roster at least. “You’ve got some hotshot computer geek for support, but other than that you can pick whoever else you want to add to your squad yourselves”. She pushed three manila folders across the desk to us. “Here's the first cases you’re to work on. They wanted you to get familiar with them so you can hit the ground running when you get to DC”.

Radicek, Medina & I took the folders and looked at them. “You start the new gig tomorrow, so you better get home and pack”.

I looked back at the Captain,. She looked genuinely close to tears. I stepped round the desk and put a hand on her shoulder whereupon she started to sniff and looked at the floor, her tough exterior melted away.
