The Slave Codes

Chapter 5 by Arthor Thomarius Arthor Thomarius

The backbone of all the civilizations of The Spiral, the Slave Codes are the divine manifestation of cosmic hierarchy from the gods and dragons descending down to the mortal and monsterous species. Though some creatures are more difficult to bind than others, once bound, the monster is transformed from a soulless killing machine into a faithful and devoted servant whose whole life is oriented around maximizing their asset value and being pleasing and of worth to the own that owns them.

The Slave Codes are a piece of Deep Primordial Magick from at Outside of Time, they were never so much created as applied. They are a collection of interlocking enchantments, curses, and multi-harmonic spell works that defy easy definition which upon application have the end result of obliging their subject to become obedient, devoted, and dutiful to their owner.

For monsters, binding brings with it feelings of deep contentment and a sense of purpose. The magic naturally integrates itself with the monster's mind, filling their psyche with new ideas and sensations which gives the creature the knowledge and drive to serve their owner with diligence and enthusiasm. The bindings not only enhance a monster's power, but it also opens new skills and abilities. The most common being the ability to transform between their natural monster form and a humanoid form for easier interaction with their owners.

Some races, humans in particular, are largely immune from The Slave Codes. Though most such natural immunity can be overcome by the application of enchanted artifacts, shackles and collars being particularly popular, though septum rings are considered to carry be an effective carrier for the enchantments. For humans, the experience of being enslaved is unnatural but intoxicating as an alien presence takes control. The internal overseer uses the slaves own feelings punish resistance and rewards compliance.

Then there are those races that fall in between. The anthro-breeds and their demi-human offspring possess conscience and a sense of ethics no different from their human counterparts, yet these bestial breeds and their hybrid progeny have no immunity from being bound magically. They can be forced into slavery as easily as any greenskin or elemental. This leads inevitably to debates about the utility and morality of enslaving anthros and demi-humans.

The Slave Codes are perceived as infallible. Humans take it for granted that beings bound into magical obedience are entirely harmless to their owners. The Slave Codes are seen as unbreakable as gravity, as reliable as light-speed. As sure as they are that fire is hot and water is wet, people of The Spiral know that a creature bound by The Slave Codes' Divine power will drive themselves to dutifully serve, obsequiously obey, and strive to be pleasing to their owner in all things.
