The Scarlet Witch of Villeperdue
If Wanda Maximoff had been born in France instead of Eastern Europe, her story would be rooted in isolation, local traditions of folklore and magic, and the nightmares of the Cold War.
A Loire Village: Claudine Roger
* Name: She would be named Claudine Roger. (Roger implies fame, similar to Maximoff/Pietro).
* Hometown: A fictional, remote village called "Villeperdue" (Lost Town) in the Loire Valley region, known for its ancient châteaux and mysterious, forested environment.
* Latent Power: Claudine grew up in abject poverty. She and her super-fast twin brother, Paul (in place of Pietro), never attended formal school. Claudine’s magical abilities (which the villagers called "La Magie des Vielles Femmes" or "The Ancient Call") manifested early: she could subtly manipulate emotions, which caused her to be feared and ostracized by the village folk. Tragedy in Villeperdue
Claudine's tragedy occurred while France was navigating the post-World War II period or the turbulent Cold War era. The Roger family was home when a faulty experimental missile or shell, belonging to a major French arms corporation (perhaps loosely connected to Stark Industries France), struck their home.
Only Claudine and Paul survived the blast. They were trapped for two days next to the unexploded ordnance that had landed in their house. This ordnance bore the insignia of the arms company. The traumatic experience awakened Claudine's latent magical power and instilled in her a deep hatred for powerful corporations and warmongers.
**** by Hydra
Following the incident, Hydra, operating as an active post-WWII underground organization in France, became aware of the Roger twins. Always searching for superhuman assets, Hydra stole Claudine and Paul from a makeshift orphanage near Orléans.
Hydra transported the twins to a secret facility hidden beneath the French Alps. There, they were subjected to intense genetic and chemical experimentation.
* The Core Experiment: Hydra attempted to channel a powerful, mysterious energy derived from an ancient artifact (similar to the Mind Stone) into the twins.
* Paul: Paul gained superhuman speed under the energy's influence, becoming "Pôle Roger" or "L'Aigle" (The Eagle).
* Claudine: The mysterious energy amplified Claudine’s latent, chaotic folk magic, escalating it to the level of mental manipulation and reality-warping chaos magic. The energy manifested around her hands as blinding, reddish-crimson auras.
The Rise of La Sorcière Rouge
Claudine was emotionally tortured, and her powers projected her fears and trauma into intense hallucinations and distorted realities. She became a powerful weapon, but Hydra could not fully control her mind.
She was dubbed "La Sorcière Rouge" (The Scarlet Witch), not only for her crimson magical aura but for the sheer rage and bitterness Hydra had cultivated within her.
Hydra unleashed Claudine and Paul as agents of chaos across Europe to destabilize Western powers, and Claudine's core mission became the destruction of any power reminiscent of the corporation that destroyed her life.
