The Rats

You leap down into the sewer, quickly shutting the manhole on top of you. You wrinkle your nose at the putrid stench that violently assaults your nostrils.

Your natural night vision begins to kick in as you continue onwards. You tread lightly, as you really don't want to fall into the definitely unhygenic soup of human waste two feet away.

Knowledge of the sewers is necessary to survive as a petty thief here. You pass by a few other shades in more common areas, but the Templars might be patrolling above here in search of you. No, you're not going up here. Instead, you head for a lesser-known area of town.

Whenever you hear scurrying feet, you stop moving. The rats down here are, as mentioned, large and very vicious. Thankfully their vision in the dark isn't as good as yours, and their sense of smell is thrown off by the amount of feces swims in the nearby sewer canals.

You continue walking until you come across a pack of rats. They appear to be asleep, but you can't be too sure. These things can easily maul a man.

You search your robes for something useful - a small dagger you carry on your person at all times. You are somewhat familiar with sneakily incapacitating people, but not oversized rodents. Instead of sneaking up on them, you could alternatively make a loud noise by throwing it ahead and sneaking around them. No guarantee this'll work, though.

Not too far beyond the rats is a ladder leading to certain safety - the Big Roof. Food and shelter for thieves of necessity, and for you, the comfort of your room.

Unless you get on the move, however, that safety remains out of reach. Plus, the longer you stay here, the greater the odds of a giant rat ambushing you and ripping you to shreds before feasting on your corpse.
