What's next?

The Next Morning

Rikki woke up annoyed with herself. Work was brutal that morning, three back-to-back case notes, a tense phone call with a mother convinced her son’s relapse was everyone’s fault but his, and a drop-in from her supervisor that had her heart racing for reasons she couldn’t explain. And every time she looked at her phone, something inside her stirred.

A part of her was annoyed at Devin for texting, at herself for replying, at the easy way it pushed the boundaries of inappropriate. At lunch, she caught herself re-reading the messages. At 2:13 p.m., her phone buzzed again. She glanced around the office like someone might see.

Devin: Do you ever feel like everything gets quieter when it rains?

She exhaled, slow.

Rikki: Yes.

Devin: I like it. Makes it easier to breathe.

She glanced out the window. Overcast. Damp. He was right, it did feel quieter today.

Devin: As a kid I would sit in the car when it rained. I liked the sound from inside the car. No matter how hard it rained everything seemed peaceful

Rikki: That’s really sweet Devin

Devin: Thanks

At 5:42 p.m., Rikki finally clocked out. She didn’t check her messages again until she was home. On the drive home she told herself no more texting. She’d almost deleted the messages but every time her thumb hovered over Delete Conversation, she found a reason to wait.

Her phone lit up.

Devin: Can I tell you something without it being weird?

Rikki: I mean you kind of already made it weird by asking that.

Devin: Okay. Fair.

Devin: I had a dream about you last night.

Rikki: Not sure I want to hear this.

Devin: It wasn’t like that.

Devin: I mean… not completely.

She waited. Screen glowing. Thumb hovering. Not responding but not stopping him either.

Devin: We were standing on a rooftop. It was night. Quiet. But not cold. And you looked… I don’t know. Not like you do during our check-ins. You looked different

Devin: You were laughing at something I said. Like really laughing. Head thrown back and everything.

Rikki swallowed.

Devin: And I remember thinking: “I’ve never heard her laugh like that.”

Devin: Then you leaned against me, like it was the most normal thing in the world. And it didn’t feel like we were breaking any rules. It just felt good.

Rikki’s fingers twitched on the screen, not sure how to respond.

Rikki: You need to be careful what you share with me.

Devin: I know.

Devin: In the dream, You looked at me like I really was someone. At least someone to you.

That one did something to her. Rikki stared at it, blinking slowly.
